Pumas acquire Alejandro Mayorga from Chivas

Pumas made their third signing of the offseason when they acquired Alejandro Mayorga from Chivas. In what looks to be the best addition so far, the leftback is a promising youngster who has seen his opportunities in Guadalajara decrease. Mayorga will come in as a loan and is the third acquisition after Sebastian Saucedo and Favio Alvarez, who both came from MLS.

Mayorga was once a top prospect with Chivas. He was a standout on the 2017 U20 World Cup team that got to the quarterfinals and that had among them Edson Alvarez and Uriel Antuna. Mayorga and Alvarez were then taken by Mexican National team coach Juan Carlos Osorio to train with the 2017 Confederations Cup team during the competition. They then went to the Gold Cup tournament that was played after the Confederations Cup.

Unfortunately for Mayorga, his career since then has gone in a totally different path from Alvarez. While Alvarez went to the World Cup and is now a national team regular player who plays his club football in Europe with Ajax, Mayorga has never gotten back to the national team and was a bench player with Chivas under Luis Fernando Tena. While he had a good spell during a loan out to Necaxa, he was never able to maintain a regular role in Chivas.

With Jeison Angulo leaving the club, he will be primed to take the starting spot with Pumas but will face competition from youngster Idekel Dominguez and veteran Alan Mendoza. Yet he is favored to make the club, and hopefully Pumas will bolster his stay even more than Necaxa did as he tries to get back on track and fulfill the promise he had shown three years ago.
