Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Holy. Crap. It's happening. They may actually be making a live-action adaptation of Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade, the anime by Oshii Mamoru from 1999. Those guys with the red eyes are the elite squad from it. There's a post on Twitch (via The Film Stage) saying that various "Korean outlets" have been reporting that Korean director Kim Jee-woon will be at the helm of the live-action Wolf Brigade movie. Kim is in the midst of finishing his English-language action film The Last Stand with Schwarzenegger and will apparently be going back to Korea to make the Jin Roh movie, first mentioned in '09. It will be retitled Inrang instead.

Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade is an anime set within Mamoru Oshii's Kerberos saga, an alternate history of a totalitarian Japan about what would happen if Japan lost World War II to Japan's friends - the Germans. The fascinating story follows a member of the Jin-Roh Brigade, an elite secret para-military police force that's part of the Special Armed Garrison, who falls for the sister of a female terrorist who died in front of him on duty. There's obviously a lot more to it than that, but it's a very rich story that could make for great cinema, especially in the hands of Kim Jee-woon. His 2008 film The Good, the Bad, the Weird is packed with the kind of kick ass, energetic action that I hope we'll see re-envisioned in Inrang/The Wolf Brigade.

Kim Jee-woon is one a few highly regarded Korean directors breaking into English-language/Hollywood cinema. His filmography includes The Quiet Family, The Foul King, A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, The Good the Bad the Weird and one of our recent favorite films I Saw the Devil. While there are a few other filmmakers I wouldn't mind for this, I think it's a perfect fit for Jee-woon to take on The Wolf Brigade and I'm getting a bit too excited for how this will turn out. There's some great action and cool visuals in Jin Roh that will make for even sleeker, cooler visuals in a movie. We'll continue to keep an eye on this project.

This is the best news ever. It's rare to hear an idea so good you know you could have never come up with it. Please make it happen.

Norbert Korzus How interesting. When I read the above news, I thought: "Oh my. Why on earth would they want to adapt the most boring - by far - anime I've ever seen in my life". And I've seen a lot of them.

That doesn't matter at all. There was no reason for it to be paced the way it was. even if it was live action it'd have been one of the most BORING films I've ever seen, and I saw it in theaters. If anything, this means the story will finally be good, intense and have characters I care about.

They got good outfits, in a space Nazi sort of way. Would much rather see Aachi & Ssipak made into a film, best Korean animation I've watched and I imagine a lot funnier than that darknessfest. It might be better as a movie though.

I saw this movie in theaters and I absolutely hated it. It's boring, plodding, has horrible character interactions, but takes place in a really interesting world. I'd like to see what Kim Jee-woon does with it because he can only make it better.

There's 2 versions of the anime, 1 is way too long, I agree. Still good stuff imo.
