Project's full title FAO Climate Risk Toolbox (CRTB)
Start date 06/01/2022
Status Ongoing
Objective / Goal The Climate Risk Toolbox – CRTB was developed by the FAO Risks Team (FAO Environment Workstream within the FAO Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment – OCB) and the FAO AgroInformatics Team (FAO Digitalization and Informatics – CSI Division) to support the design of climate-resilient agricultural investment projects and plans, by allowing users to conduct climate risk screenings through advanced climate-related geospatial information and data.
Beneficiaries Open access
Activities The CRTB includes a repository of up-to-date climatic, geographical, social, and economic geospatial information which help identify the climate-related risk in any area of interest worldwide. To produce the climate risk maps, the different components of risk (hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and adaptive capacity) are aggregated based on the IPCC's risk conceptual framework used in the 6th Assessment Report (AR6) (IPCC, 2022). As a result, the obtained maps consider the overall climate risk for the baseline period, near-term (2021-40) and mid-term future (2041-60), respectively for a low emission scenario (Shared Socio-economic Pathway - SSP1-2.6) and a high emission scenario (SSP5-8.5).
Impact

The CRTB was developed to mainstream climate resilience within agricultural investment projects, policy plans, and decision-making processes, by allowing users worldwide to perform climate risk screenings. The CRTB includes a series of guiding questions, each of them associated with a geospatial layer, that automatically identifies baseline and future climate-related hazards, the natural and human exposure, as well as socio-economic vulnerability and adaptive capacity of targeted population and agricultural systems. During the risk screening process, tailored recommendations are given to promote agricultural transformation and adaptation to climate change.

The Climate Risk Toolbox (CRTB) was developed to support climate-resilient project design. The tool is an open-access resource, hosted on the Hand-in-Hand Geospatial platform, allowing users to obtain a climate riskscreening in a few steps.
