Beautifying your buttocks may be one of the last things you prioritize when making a plastic surgery wish list. But the truth is, your “butt” plays an essential role in the overall balance of your body’s proportions. Whether your buttocks are sagging due to aging or a significant weight loss or have little to no volume or shape due to genetics, plastic surgery can help improve your rearview’s overall lift and shape!

“The Brazilian Butt Lift, sometimes called BBL for short, has become increasingly popular over the past decade,” says Dr. Christine Stewart, a board-certified plastic surgeon and partner at Edina Plastic Surgery. “Although the name sounds exotic, it’s really just a marketing strategy to make buttocks fat transfer sound more enticing,” she explains. “In fact, a Brazilian Butt Lift, contrary to its name, does not include a surgical buttocks lift or implants. Instead, it focuses on augmenting the shape, curvature, and fullness of the butt with fat transferred and redistributed from another area of the body. Using the body’s own fat, as opposed to implants, yields results that look and feel completely natural. But, to truly transform the appearance of the buttocks and enhance the overall balance of the body’s proportions, a patient may benefit from pairing other plastic surgeries with their Brazilian Butt Lift.”

An essential factor to consider before even scheduling a consultation to discuss Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is whether or not you have enough fat available in other areas of your body to harvest and transfer. At Edina Plastic Surgery, we require that patients have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 25 to be a potential candidate for Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. 4 Procedures That May Enhance Your Brazilian Butt Lift Results

#1 – Surgical Buttocks Lift

“Many patients need volume and lift to achieve a full transformation to their buttocks,” says Dr. Stewart. “A BBL is designed to add volume and shape but does not address loose, sagging skin in the buttocks. A surgical butt lift excises excess skin and fat to restore a more lifted and youthful-looking backside. Four different incision approaches to butt lift surgery allow your surgeon to customize their approach to your specific needs. A butt lift and BBL can be performed together to accentuate the lift, shape, fullness, and firmness of the buttocks.”

#2 – Liposuction

A Brazilian Butt Lift presents a unique opportunity to simultaneously enhance other areas of your body during surgery that fat needs to be harvested from.

“Adding liposuction to your BBL procedure makes complete sense functionally, aesthetically, and financially because we need to harvest fat regardless, so why not fully enhance the area we take it from with liposuction,” states Dr. Stewart. “Most of us have a problem area somewhere on our body where fat doesn’t seem to budge. Fat needed for BBL transfer can come from almost anywhere, including your abdomen, hips, flanks, back, and/or thighs. After your surgeon harvests what they need for transfer to the buttocks, they can return to that area with liposuction to remove additional fat and add more contour. The best part is, by improving the shape of these areas, you may actually enhance the overall result of your Brazilian Butt Lift by offsetting it with a slimmer waistline or leaner thighs. During your consultation, your surgeon will work with you to design the ideal plan to deliver the most “bang for your buck!”

#3 – Tummy Tuck

Nothing compliments a new, shapely derriere than a trim waist and flat stomach. That’s why the combination of a tummy tuck with a Brazilian Butt Lift is so popular, but this combination may be limited to those who need particular areas of their buttock augmented, such as the lateral or upper quadrant of the buttock. The reason for this is that after an abdominoplasty, you will be sitting in v type position, where a lot of pressure will be placed on the central portion of the buttock and the inferior portion of the buttock. This pressure is not helpful to the fat engraftment process that needs to take place after a BBL, and in fact, it can cause fat necrosis of the new fat that was just transferred. You will need to discuss with your surgeon if these two procedures can be done in conjunction, based on your particular anatomical needs.

Abdominoplasty, frequently called tummy tuck, removes undesirable skin and fat from the abdomen and, if necessary, repairs separated abdominal muscles,” explains Dr. Stewart. “The transformation can be pretty dramatic when someone smooths and flattens their frontside while re-volumizing and shaping their backside in one surgery. This combination surgery can put the body in much better balance overall.”

#4 – Thigh Lift

Beautifully shaped buttocks can be emphasized and accentuated with smooth, shapely thighs. If you are concerned about excess sagging skin on your inner or outer thighs, consider partnering your BBL with thigh lift surgery.

“Our body really is a sum of its parts,” says Dr. Stewart. “We want those parts to be balanced, in proportion, and for there to be smooth, natural-looking transitions between different body areas. One of those important transitions is where the tops of the upper thighs meet the buttocks. A thigh lift creates taut, slender contours throughout the thigh area for those struggling with excess skin, textural problems, or stubborn deposits of fat on the thighs. This procedure can be the perfect lower body complement to a Brazilian Butt Lift and create a beautiful transition between the legs and buttocks.”

Is a Brazilian Butt Lift Right for You?

“Many patients are so fixated on their top area of concern or procedure that they scheduled to discuss during a consultation that their derriere is their last priority,” says Dr. Stewart. “But balance plays such a crucial role in aesthetics that it’s important to look at the body overall and as a whole to realize what procedures may optimize its shape and attractiveness. A Brazilian Butt Lift can have a dramatic effect as a stand-alone procedure, but is especially beneficial when coupled with other surgeries.”
