Enjoyed the Tortured Hero & Sassy Heroine Partnering to Solve the Case
At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this story because the heroine, Noelle Tremain, annoyed me in the last story. She sort of did in this one too, but underneath the surface pushiness and selfishness was a whole other layer of worth. The hero was one to tug at the heartstrings. Hector had a horrid childhood and had to scrap and fight for every good thing that came to him. He has a mutation to him where his hands are lethal and his own emotional state are what sets them off. He walks through life alone and his only reason for living is his job with AIR. Hector knows the new recruit is trouble, but from day one Noelle has him bewitched. Noelle is just as enchanted by the big, warrior-looking Hector too and can't understand his need to push her away. The story unfolds with ... The story unfolds with these two both pushing away and tugging close, hurting each other and soothing each other and in the end having to decide if love is worth the risk. While the romance between Hector and Noelle goes on, there is also a case to solve regarding a slave ring. Mia partners Hector and Noelle to solve it. Normally, I don't have a lot of patience for this type of romantic tension when there is so much back and forth to it, but these were both very damaged people- particularly Hector so I knew it would take a lot for them to be able to come together. The other plot line involving the case was pretty exciting too. The bad guy is worked out just tracking down clues and the why, but that doesn't mean much when the hard part is catching him. There is a twist near the end and a surprise re-emergence of a character who had disappeared earlier in the series leaving a dangling plot thread. Sorry to report, that the thread is still dangling after this one. It was great revisiting characters from previous books. I've gotten to where I just love it when Dallas and Devyn make their appearances and some day I hope Dallas gets his own book. Hector was a pretty impressive hero and that took me by surprise because of how quiet he was in previous books. I was glad that Noelle turned out to be a likeable character and I enjoyed getting to know her better. So all in all, this was a good read and I look forward to picking up more books from this author.
