Born in Elmore County, November 18, 1918, Ms. Melton was the 5th born of 10 siblings. After high school graduation, she pursued a degree in Home Economics from what is now the University of Montevallo. On October 4, 1941, she married Barney Leon Melton who precedes her in death. Never to remarry, Ms. Melton went back to college earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from Auburn University in 1965. She taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades for the Montgomery County School system until her retirement in 1979. Never slowing down, she enjoyed gardening in her backyard, continued to travel throughout Europe, played bridge several times a week at the Crump Senior Center in Montgomery and held memberships with PEO and Omicron, both educator organizations. She also hosted an exchange student from Finland in the early 90s and taught conversational English at New Life School. She is preceded in death by her daughter Sarah “Evalyn” Crabtree, sisters Mary Lanier Hewett, Lucas Lanier, Lois Lanier, Opel Lanier and Joice Lanier, brothers Ludd Lanier, Tullis Lanier, Mason Lanier and Luke Lanier. Ruth leaves behind a son Barney Leon Melton, Jr, his wife Judy, 3 granddaughters Leslie Johnson, Merry Naramore and Melody Neal, 5 great grandchildren Ashtyn Johnson, Amber Naramore, Adrianna Neal, Jonathan Neal & Katie Hillis, and 1 Great great granddaughter Kaislyn Hillis.
