Zachary Quinto has confirmed that he will not appear in Heroes Reborn.

The Star Trek actor - who played villain Sylar in the original NBC series - told Buzzfeed that he wanted to concentrate on other projects, and that creator Tim Kring was "very understanding".

"No, I'm not going to go back," he said. "I talked to them about it, and Tim reached out to me when they decided they were going to do it. We had a great conversation."

He continued: "It was such a meaningful experience for me - I loved that job, I loved those people. I just felt like I didn't want to go back to it. Tim was very, very understanding. He was very understanding and supportive."

Talking about the new series, he added: "I'm thrilled that they're doing it, I'm thrilled that Jack Coleman is going back to it. And I know that they just cast Zach Levi, which is great. I mean, it's a great thing to be a part of. I just felt like I need to cultivate other outlets for myself."

Since appearing in Heroes, Quinto has gone on to star as Spock in Star Trek and 2013 follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness, as well as American Horror Story.

NBC has already got Jack Coleman to rejoin as Noah Bennet and more original stars are likely to return.

Milo Ventimiglia - who played Peter Petrelli - has ruled himself out of Heroes Reborn, while Hayden Panettiere (Claire Bennet) said she had received no contact about the project back in April.

NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the spinoff series, which will air in 2015.
