Her lawyer Patrizia Ubaldi confirmed (via The AP): "She had hoped to get better, something that didn't happen."

Considered a sex symbol in the 1950s and '60s, Ekberg is known for playing Sylvia Rank in Federico Fellini's 1960 movie La Dolce Vita.

She lived in Italy for most of her life, and appeared in films including War and Peace, Clowns, Intervista and Paris Holiday.

Ekberg married twice - to Anthony Steel and Rik van Nutter - and had no children, something which she has named as her only regret in life.

A ceremony for Ekberg will be held in Rome this week.
