Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 will apparently feature a grown-up version of Carrie Henn's Newt… when it eventually hits the big screen.

The project is currently on hold at 20th Century Fox, as the studio focuses on Sir Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant.

However, Aliens star Michael Biehn recently stoked fans' hopes for Alien 5 by insisting that it's on the backburner "just for a little while".

"I know Ridley Scott is doing his movie first and is going to be the executive producer on this one, so I'm really looking forward to that," he told Icons of Fright.

"I know that Ridley's focus is on the second Prometheus and I'm sure that he and Fox both don't want that and Neill's movie to come out right next to each other."

Biehn also dropped a major hint that Sigourney Weaver's Ripley and his own Hicks will be joined in Alien 5 by an adult Newt, the child first seen in 1986's Aliens.

"They're planning on bringing me and Newt back, and at this point Newt will be around 27 years old," he teased. "I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it's really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt.

"It would keep the franchise alive and the studios would make money, because that's what the bottom line is now: money."

While the scheduling of Alien 5 is being decided, Neill Blomkamp is moving forward on an adaptation of Thomas Sweterlitsch's sci-fi novel The Gone World.

Meanwhile, Alien: Covenant is scheduled to reach cinemas on October 6, 2017.
