Alkylphenols (AP) and Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEO)

Alkylphenols (AP) and Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEO)

Alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates are nonionic surfactants. Alkylphenols were once widely used in household detergents and other cleaning products. Also, alkylphenol ethoxylate has been used in a number of industrial applications. These compounds are important breakdown products of surfactants. Alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates are known as endocrine disruptors (seriously affecting the functioning of the glands in the body).

Alkylphenols (AP) and Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEO)

Alkylphenols belong to the group of synthetic organic compounds composed of chains of carbon atoms. Since the 1940s, alkylphenols have been used for surfactant, which are widely used detergent-like compounds. These compounds have begun to be phased out after their harm to human health and the environment has been determined.

Alkylphenols are widely used as surfactants in detergents and cleaning products for industrial and institutional businesses. However, for residential buildings, these products are now less common. Alkylphenols are added to pesticide formulations as inert ingredients to improve performance. In addition, paper production, leather and textile processing, metal processing, It is used in dispersing oil spills and as components in paints, adhesives and personal care products.

Alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates are not easily degraded and are considered a persistent contaminant in aquatic environments. Some of these are somewhat volatile so some of these chemicals are released into the air. It is known to accumulate in the natural environment, especially in invertebrates and fish.

A few standards taken into account in tests performed in advanced laboratories are:

  • TS EN ISO 18254 Textiles - Method for detection and determination of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO)
  • TS EN ISO 21084 Textile - Method for determining alkylphenols
  • TS EN ISO 18218 Leather - Determination of ethoxylated alkylphenols
  • TS ISO 6842 Surfactants - Sulfated ethoxylated alcohols and alkylphenols - Determination of total active substance

Within the scope of textile chemical testing services, alkylphenols (AP) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) testing services are also provided by our organization.
