The show is centered on the media figure of the same name, who rose to fame after being featured on billboards installed around Los Angeles in the 1980s.

Angelyne also made a point of concealing her early life from the public, and the details about her upbringing and true identity were only revealed in an article that was published by The Hollywood Reporter in 2017.

Production on the series initially began in 2020, although shooting was quickly shut down due to the onset of the global pandemic.

Filming on the project eventually picked up again and took place over much of last year.

Rossum spoke about working on Angelyne, which was released on Hulu on Thursday, during an interview with The A.V. Club, and she pointed out that she wanted to portray the media figure in a respectful manner.

'Playing her over so many decades and aging in both directions is very challenging, and to do it realistically but with kindness, grace, glamor, and accuracy. It was important for me to handle it tenderly,' she said.

The actress also noted that the media personality had established herself as a figure who did not necessarily conform to a conventional lifestyle.

'Angelyne's version of things is pure fantasy. Her insistence on preserving the mystery and enigma and not giving it all away is kind of her driving the car, preserving that fantasy for us, so she can be whatever we need her to be.'

Rossum pointed out that the media personality likely approved the project as it portrayed her in a positive light.

'The reason I think she gave us her blessing to do this is we were interested in returning that mystique to her and using her own words,' she said.

The actress concluded by speaking about the program's overarching themes.

'I...hope we have told a story about identity, reinvention, and control over your life that is empowering and universally emotional,' she stated.
