If you are anything like me, then you were once obsessed with the 1984 film The Neverending Story, a story within a story about a boy reading about a magical world named Fantasia that was under threat of being destroyed by The Nothing. And if you were anything like me, you also completely adored its soulful hero, Atreyu, played by then 12-year-old Noah Hathaway. Remember that scene in which Atreyu loses his beloved horse, Artax, in the Swamp of Sadness? That scene literally scarred me for life.
The movie was an devastating allegory for depression, but at least one could always take solace in his earnest brown eyes, and floppy hair, and glowing smile.
The cult classic catapulted Hathaway into a teen idol, but then he quickly disappeared from the spotlight and took on a number of other careers, including mortgage broker, tattoo artist, dancer, martial arts trainer, motorcycle builder and racer. Now the 44-year-old is setting his sights on Hollywood again, and he looks a lot different than the wide-eyed youth we remember. Still got that smile though!
