So, can you tell us a little about this place? This foreboding structure, which towers high above the city, was once a 10th-century fortress; but today, Alcázar Fortress may be best known from its ubiquitous position on the cover of many a modern-day Spanish textbook. The architectural masterpiece houses a military museum that's located in the fortress and an adjoining building.

What's in the permanent collection? Are there temporary exhibitions, too?The massive trove of historical and military artifacts on display will walk you through the epic battles and monarchical rulers of Spain. The permanent collection is presented in English and Spanish, but the museum does an exceptional job of catering to its large international audience with multi-lingual guides and audio tours. A temporary exhibition on the national civil guard drew wide acclaim.

What did you make of the crowd?A diverse crowd—lots of families and young kids.

On the practical tip, how were the facilities? The museum has ample seating, but it can be sparse on Sunday when admission is free. There are also other facilities available for those with special needs.

How can we learn more about what we're seeing? In addition to guided tours, dramatized visits with guides in costume are especially fun (although infrequent). Virtual tours include special options for families—and you can enjoy them just as much as an armchair traveler.

Gift shop: obligatory, inspiring—or skip it?Take a pass on the gift shop.

What's on offer in the café?Sodium-heavy snacks and boring munchies.

Any advice for the time- or attention-challenged?It’s impossible to linger over any one exhibit—there's simply too much to see, especially if on a day trip. Opt for a more wide-reaching understanding of each important century. If you read every plaque, your head might start to spin. For those who aren't museum junkies, an hour will get you through the the various halls here. Even if you only peep the building’s façade—with its iconic towers—the visit will be worth it.
