ASHEVILLE HIGH 35, NEWTON-CONOVER 21 

NEWTON — Reggie Battle rushed for 247 yards and four touchdowns spark Asheville High to the road victory.

The Cougars (2-0) were never overtaken by the Red Devils (1-1) as Battle scored on runs of 1, 10, 25 and 14 yards in consecutive quarters, respectively. He also rushed for a two-point conversion following his final TD to accompany his 31 other attempts.

Asheville High’s other score came on a 53-yard strike from Devon Davidson to Aquila Smith that produced a 21-8 halftime lead.

SHELBY 56, REYNOLDS 39 

SHELBY — Darquez Lee passed for 481 yards and five touchdowns to lift Shelby past Reynolds and quarterback Rico Dowdle, who produced 436 yards five TDs.

The Rockets (1-1) had moved ahead, 24-14, midway through the third quarter behind Dowdle (271 yards rushing, 165 passing).

Lee then rallied the Lions (2-0) by hitting three different receivers with consecutive TD passes before Xavier Brooks added a 5-yard run for a 42-24 lead with 8:32 left.

Dowdle reeled off touchdown runs of 50, 4, 57, 11 and 24 yards. He also passed for a two-point conversion.

BRYSON CITY – Despite the defensive struggle that saw neither Smoky Mountain (1-1) nor Swain (1-1) score any points in the first half, the Mustangs were able to come away with the victory on the road.

Smoky Mountain put the first points on the board with a 25 yard field goal by Devin Macke with a little over six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Zack Beck sealed the game with a 5-yard rushing touchdown to start the fourth quarter. Beck finished the game with 49 yards on 13 carries.

BREVARD – Gage Orr ran for three touchdowns and Tanner Green added 173 yards on the ground to power Rosman past its Transylvania County rival.

The Tigers (2-0) led 28-0 at halftime following Orr’s TD runs of 12, 7 and 7 yards and a 62-yard rush by Green.

Green, who added a 15-yard TD run in the final period, needed only 13 carries to compile his total.

Hayesville scored five touchdowns on plays of 35 yards or longer, including second-quarter touchdown passes from Kyle Rhinehardt to Braxton Cox (35 yards) and Brian Smith (91 yards).

HENDERSONVILLE — The Knights scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to win their fifth straight game over two seasons.

Quarterback Trevor Craft scored all three touchdowns for North Henderson (2-0), including a 38-yard run in the final period to tie the score at 14-14.

After the Knights recovered a bobble on a Wolverines’ punt attempt, Craft scored the game winner on a 9-yard run.

Quarterback Jamal Wheeler scored two touchdowns for Polk County (1-1), including a scamper from 55 yards.
