Altar Q Toro by Oscar Valladares Cigars
Oscar Valladares is best known for such immaculate creations as Leaf by Oscar and 2012 by Oscar, but his latest release has caused quite the stir in the cigar community. That cigar is Altar Q. Keeping with his Mayan theme, something he uses to celebrate his Honduran roots, Oscar Valladares named this cigar in reference to a stone altar carved in the first century depicting the lineage of Mayan leaders. The original artifact was discovered in 1886 at Copan, a Mayan archaeological site in western Honduras. For this blend, hailing from the Oscar Valladares factory in Honduras, of course, we have filler and binder tobacco from Honduras and an aged golden Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper leaf. The blend seems simple at first glance, but this 6” x 52 Toro has quite the story to tell, and it happens beautifully from first light to last puff.
The packaging is something to behold with this cigar. The box is an homage to the original Mayan artifact after which the blend is named, and each vitola bears two bands, each cigar representing one of 16 rulers found on Altar Q. A different ruler’s name is printed at the bottom of each band near the foot. It is obvious that no minor detail was overlooked with these. As for the cigars themselves, each vitola is rustic in appearance and finished with a pigtail cap. The construction is impeccable, lending to an easy draw, plentiful smoke production, and a razor-sharp burn line. Altar Q begins with a creamy, woody note that remains throughout the entire experience. A dark earthy core forms the base of the flavor profile, and notes of coffee, leather, and faint citrus are noticeable along the way. A rich, creamy finish is the icing on the cake, and a hefty dose of cedar is readily detectable through the nose. Overall, Altar Q finishes as a distinct medium-bodied cigar with plenty of complexity and beautiful balance to boot.
While this cigar may not be intended for a less experienced audience, it certainly can be enjoyed by just about anyone. The medium body and easy smoking feel to the flavor profile make it a great stick to enjoy at any time of the day. Truly seasoned connoisseurs will doubtless appreciate the delicate complexities along the way as Altar Q tells its intricate story.
