Thessalian Anagoge

What is Anagoge?

Anagoge is a Greek word suggesting a climb or ascent upwards.  The Thessalian Anagoge is a method of teaching which contains the fundamental Thessalian beliefs formulated in a way that facilitates their understanding.  It is a mystical and spiritual interpretation of our beliefs presented in a very specific way in order to facilitate a greater understanding.

What is the purpose of Anagoge?

The Anagoge serves several important functions:

  1. It conveys the essential and fundamental content of Thessalian religion and culture in a complete and summary way.

  2. This conveyance of belief and culture stimulates the soul and prepares it for the Kyklos Rite, which is one of the most important rites in Thessalian belief.

  3. It is a positive, objective and declarative exposition of Thessalian doctrine.

  4. It is intended to assist those who feel the desire to teach, namely the preceptors and clergy of our religion.

What is the Kyklos Rite?

The Kyklos Rite, or Rite of the Circle, is the first step into Thessalian religion for everyone.  It is during this rite that the Oracle of Hermes is opened and the Gods are consulted on behalf of the Neophyte (new member).  At this oracular consultation, two deities (a god and a goddess) will stand up and claim the Neophyte to become their 'spiritual parents'.  The reception of these two deities, known collectively as the "Theoi" sets the entire tone of the Neophyte's future.  It is of extreme importance and a cause for celebrations.

The Thessalian Anagoge serves to educate our children in the methods that have proven successful for us as Thessalians to communicate with the powers and energies of our deities and each other. The teacher, called a Preceptor, endeavors to introduce the traditions and religious teachings of Thessalian religion, as well as the personifications of our Gods and Goddesses. Our understanding of the divine beings is primarily gained through the exploration of mythology, weekly rituals, festivals, and Sacred Texts, which enables us to connect with them on a personal level. By developing a deep knowledge and affection for the gods and goddesses, we become better equipped to comprehend the meaning of their messages. The Anagoge is a valuable tool in helping us to comprehend the teachings of Thessalian religion, but our understanding will be limited to the extent that we are committed to building a personal relationship with the divine beings.
