Alfa Romeo is working on a new small electric sports car that will rival the future Alpine A110 as well as the all-electric Porsche Boxster. The new car will serve as the spiritual successor to the Alfa Romeo 4C but probably won’t launch until after 2027.
Confirmation of the new sports car comes shortly after Alfa Romeo unveiled the new 33 Stradale, capped at just 33 units worldwide. Unlike the 33 Stradale, the new sports car will be mass-produced and according to Alfa Romeo product boss Daniel Guzzafame, could adopt the ‘Spider’ name, something that the Italian automaker refuses to kill off.
“There are some items from Alfa Romeo that we don’t kill: one is the Spider, the other is a love of cars,” he told Autocar . “We do want to continue them, because that’s the brand. And that’s in our ideas, so let’s see if we can make that a plan.”
The carmaker will focus on bringing the new car to the market once it has five models in its current line-up. It could be dubbed the 4E Spider and may take design inspiration from the 33 Stradale, a car that is also being offered with an electric powertrain. Guzzafame added that the car may also mimic some of the styling elements of the ‘Duetto’ Spider designed by Pininfarina in the 1960s.

As for the car’s powertrain, it may be underpinned by the STLA Medium platform from Stellantis that is used by the new Peugeot E-3008. It is a little less clear how much performance the 4E Spider will deliver as it will depend on where Alfa Romeo wants to position the car. It could opt to give it a similar powertrain to the next-generation Giulia EV sedan that’s tipped to have a 100 kWh battery pack, a 500-mile range, and deliver up to 1,000 hp. However, it is more likely that a smaller battery pack will be adopted to keep the car’s weight down.
According to Guzzafame, Alfa Romeo is working on ways to increase the emotional appeal of the car to give it the vibe of being a proper sports car fitting of the Clover Leaf badge.
“It’s not what you hear, it’s what you feel,” he said. “We’re working on how to transfer that into a vibe, more than sound, and something that will resonate in your ear, because you need to get something from your gut. If you feel that, then that will be the future of Alfa Romeo.”
