Horizontal Developing Chamber for TLC CAMAG® HPTLC Vario System with accessories

The HPTLC Vario System is designed for the efficient optimization of developing conditions for chromatography on HPTLC plates.

Advantages:
  • Development with six different solvents can be tested side by side.
  • Sandwich configuration as well as tank configuration can be simulated side by side, making results directly comparable.
  • Six different conditions of pre-equilibration, including relative humidity, can be tested simultaneously.
  • These variations of developing conditions can be freely combined.

Application examples

Schematic:
S1-S6 = developing solvents
C1-C6 = solvents for precondition or activation of the silica gel at different related humidities

1N76_01
1) Optimizing the developing solvent without preconditioning
Development with six different solvents (S) side by side, without preconditioning. This is equivalent to a development in a sandwich configuration.

1N76_02
2) Optimizing the developing solvent with preconditioning
Development with six different solvents (S) side by side, and with the conditioning troughs containing the same six solvents (C). Equivalent to a development in tank configuration.
1N76_03
3) Optimizing the developing solvent after uniform layer preconditioning
Preconditioning of all tracks with the same conditioning liquid (C), then development with six different solvents (S) in sandwich configuration.
1N76_04
4) Optimizing preconditioning
Preconditioning with six different conditioning liquids (C); then development of all tracks with the same solvent (S).

Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)

Although the principle of thin-layer chromatography is more than a century old, it did not make its breakthrough as an analytical method until about 50 years ago.
Thanks to the development of new sorbents and supports, as well as increasing instrumentation and automation, TLC has become a versatile separation method. It is used both in qualitative analysis and in quantitative analysis.
Applications range from simple manual separation processes in classic TLC to automated processes in HPTLC (high performance thin layer chromatography).

Advantages of thin layer chromatography:

  • Higher sample throughput in less time
  • Suitable for screening tests
  • Pilot process for HPLC
  • The ready-to-use TLC layer functions as a data storage device for separation results
  • The separated substances can be used later for further analysis (e.g. IR, MS)
  • By switching the mobile and the stationary phases, the separation process can be optimised quickly and cost-efficient
