CalEarth Superadobe Structures
The CalEarth campus in Hesperia, California has been a center for research, development and education since 1991. A walk around our campus is a walk through the historical evolution of SuperAdobe building technology - many buildings have been standing for more than 20 years and we continue to watch and learn from them. The building designs range from a small emergency shelter for one person that can be built in a day to form temporary villages, to a 3 bedroom, 2 car garage home, all built using the same principles.
While some of our structures on-site are fully finished, others are part of our ongoing research and development process. We are looking at the performance of the structure in response to climate conditions and seismic events. These structures do not represent our finished work structures, but are extremely informative. One lesson we learn repeatedly is that the strength in the geometry of the arch is unmatched!
