Alicuanta - Gitanjali Jain Serrano and David Ryshpan

$20

ALICUANTA: signifying a quantity or part that does not fit into its larger whole evenly or equally.

Through poetry, music, dance and visual elements, this show explores the lineage of General Francisco Roque Serrano (1889-1927), an influential yet mysterious figure of the Mexican Revolution, and Gitanjali’s great-grandfather, who was assassinated by his opponent and mentor in the midst of the 1927 presidential campaign.

Set to the texts of Mexican poet Francisco Serrano, Alicuanta is an examination of the memory of an ancestor, and an attempt to find peace within the tumultuous history of 1920s Mexico.

Co-composed by vocalist Gitanjali Jain Serrano and pianist David Ryshpan, the hour-long suite is scored for voice, piano, electronics, double bass, drums, cajón, and string quartet.

Alicuanta premiered at Montreal’s Salle Gesù in 2012.

This performance is presented as part of the panamerican ROUTES | RUTAS panamericanas Festival.
