Calidar: In Stranger Skies

Calidar: In Stranger Skies cover design, with art by Ben Wootten.
28" x 22" poster map detailing the geographical centre of Calidar, the Great Caldera region.  Composited in Adobe Photoshop from a multitude of assets, including height maps sculpted in Photoshop, eroded in Wilbur, and lit in Blender.  Map is GIS-enabled, with accurate latitude and longitude lines matching the map projection used.
Close-up of the middle right section of the Great Caldera poster map.  The terrain colours were added in Photoshop using gradient layers set on top of the height map model.  A parchment-like texture finished up the map, giving the sea some much-needed detail.  Note also the graticule (latitude/longitude grid) overlay.
Close-up of the legend.
Detail of the central area of the poster map.  This mountainous realm really shows off the 3D model, which is detailed enough to support far larger scale maps than this one.
One final close-up, showing the title and surrounding area.  Meryath on the left received its own map in the book, showing it in the same style but with more detail.  It was also the subject of the second poster map.
The second 28" x 22" poster map I created for Calidar: In Stranger Skies.  This one uses the classic hex grid format, with all new art.  The area depicted, Meryath, was also shown in my other styles in other maps.  The close-up maps of Meryath use a different projection, with north aligned at the top of the page.
Close-up of the Legend for the hex map.  Bruce Heard designed the settlement hexes, while I drew the new terrain hexes.
Detail of the central area of the map.  This area, around Meryath's royal capital, Glorathon, is the subject of the next map below.
A hybrid map using a hex overlay and settlement symbols on a backdrop in my new topographical style.  This larger scale map shows the detail of the 3D model very nicely.  The lighting for the mountains and hills was generated using the same model as in the poster map, but cropped and tweaked slightly to add more details.
