Biography

Antonio Albarrán is an of counsel in the Baker McKenzie Madrid office.

Before joining the Firm, he worked in a Big Four indirect tax department where he provided tax legal services related to indirect taxation, corporate income tax, and carried on due diligence processes. His areas of knowledge include providing continued advice on value-added tax, property transfer, and stamp duty tax, customs and excise duties; as well as on the design and implementation of international structures for the distribution of goods and services with specific advice on proceedings concerning these matters in the EU sphere.

Practice Focus

He counsels Spanish and multinational companies on VAT and indirect tax matters, such as day-to-day advice, VAT planning, reorganization, acquisitions and obtaining tax rulings.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised a leading EU insurance comparator in grounding its position on the applicable VAT exemption of its services. This was a complex engagement due to the very difficult frame arising from the ECJ cases, the Spanish courts and administrative criteria and the tough position held by the Spanish tax authorities in this case.
  • Assisted a corporate and investment banking, asset management and banking services client in a tax audit in regard to its VAT position, specifically, with its VAT taxation arising from transactions performed among the different European branches and its headquarters.
