UPDATE 12/19/22: Stellantis confirms that three Takata-related fatalities have occurred in its cars over the last eight months and is once again imploring owners of older Dodge and Chrysler vehicles who have not previously had their recalled driver-side Takata airbags replaced to stop driving and do so as soon as possible. The company reminds drivers that the airbag inflators have chemical properties may deteriorate over time, causing them to rupture on deployment and scatter shrapnel that may cause serious injury or death.

“Time is a critical element here because the risk increases with each day these air-bag inflators go unreplaced,” said Tom McCarthy, global head of Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance at Stellantis. “We have the parts, and the service is free. We will provide alternative transportation, also free, to help people get to and from our dealerships, as needed.”

From the Stellantis release: Affected are the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Challenger, and Charger from model years 2005-2010. Owners or custodians of these unrepaired vehicles are urged to call 833-585-0144. FCA US will then arrange to have them towed, free of charge, to accommodate the free service, which takes less than an hour, on average.

If owners are unsure if their vehicle has been repaired, they are urged to call 833-585-0144, or enter their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) on checktoprotect.org.

UPDATE 5/21/2015: Takata says 265 of its airbag inflators ruptured during ballistic testing, out of more than 30,000 tested. Some of the ruptured inflators came from vehicles not originally on the recall list. Read the full Takata testing story here.

UPDATE 5/20/2015: Takata said it will declare almost 34 million vehicles defective because of airbag inflator issues, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At this point, NHTSA is waiting for automakers to supply them a complete list of affected vehicles -- in other words, we don't yet know exactly which models are on the expanded recall roster. We'll update our list as soon as we have complete details; you can also visit the NHTSA recall site for the very latest information, but note that the site has been overwhelmed by traffic.

UPDATE 3/20/2015: Honda has added a total of 104,871 examples of the 2008 Honda Pilot SUV, 2004 Honda Civic sedan, and 2001 Honda Accord sedan to the list of recalled cars.

This latest addition comes on the heels of a notification campaign by Honda during March to urge owners to replace potetially lethal airbags in the affected cars. Automotive News and Bloomberg report that in January 2015 a ruptured airbag in a Honda vehicle claimed a fifth victim.

Honda has not sent NHTSA a notification schedule for this latest batch of vehicles, with this campaign being an expansion of the earlier 14V-351 recall. Visit the NHTSA website to read more about this latest addition to the recall list.

UPDATE 12/10/2014: Mazda has announced it plans to expand a recall of its vehicles in the U.S. with Takata airbags, growing it beyond the original regional recall.

Mazda has not yet determined the number of vehicles involved nor when it will launch the expanded recall. Approximately 330,000 Mazda vehicles are now under regional recalls.

UPDATE 12/3/2014: Honda North America today said it would expand its recall of potentially explosive driver-side airbag inflators nationwide in accordance with a request from federal regulators, even as the airbag manufacturer continued to insist it’s not necessary.

Honda also will give drivers free loaner cars until repairs can be made, Rick Schostek, an executive vice president with the automaker, told a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Read more about Honda's expanded airbag recall here.

UPDATE 11/19/2014: The government this week contacted vehicle manufacturers and Takata about expanding the recall, said David Friedman, deputy administrator of NHTSA. The expanded recalls would affect vehicles produced in model year 2008 or before, Friedman said.

NHTSA confirmed that the nationwide effort would involve Ford, Honda, Chrysler, Mazda and BMW vehicles. Other automakers could be added later. "We are requesting additional data from Takata and auto manufacturers to determine the full scope of this issue," a NHTSA spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

Friedman said he did not yet know how many vehicles would be involved in a nationwide recall, or an exact list of models. "We are still checking on the details (of NHTSA's demand), but if (an expanded) recall is needed, we will cooperate with regulators and car makers to address the issue," Takata said.

UPDATE 10/23/2014: Consumers that are uncertain whether their vehicle is impacted by the Takata recalls, or any other recall, can check by their vehicle identification number (VIN) here: http://www.safercar.gov/vinlookup, though the site has been experiencing periodic outages. The vehicle VIN number consists of 17 digits and can usually be viewed near the base of the windshield on the driver's side.

Federal safety regulators expanded a warning late Tuesday about faulty airbags made by Japanese auto parts maker Takata Corp. to 6.1 7.8 million vehicles in the United States.

They also corrected and expanded a list of vehicles, issued in an advisory on Monday, with potentially defective airbags.

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges owners of certain Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors vehicles to act immediately on recall notices to replace defective Takata airbags," the agency said in a statement Tuesday, adding there should be particular urgency in areas of high humidity such as Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

"Over six million vehicles are involved in these recalls, which have occurred as far back as 18 months ago and as recently as Monday," it added.
