Publisher's summary

In 1940s Chicago, when insurance salesman Elliot Blake calls at the home of fight promoter Walt Winkler to sell him a new insurance policy, it's handsome boxer Vito who comes to the door.

Vito wants something from Elliot, but it's not car insurance.

In this gay story inspired by the classic noir novel Double Indemnity, obsessive desire unfolds in an unexpected direction.

It's not a remake. You'll never see what's coming.

Note: This book is not in the erotica or romance genre. There is no explicit sex and no Happily Ever After ending.

Way Better Than Expected

I have to say that I’ve never been interested in gay fiction, but for some reason I gave this a listen. And it was GREAT! Mr. Greene does an excellent job recreating the time period with his descriptions of the clothes, the dialog and lingo, and the gender roles. And, of course, with the pressure and fear that gay men faced if their orientation became public. Kale Williams does a terrific job bringing the characters to life, in both this book as well as the sequel, The Shadow’s Voice. Anxiously awaiting a third installment!

Disappointed

After listening to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, this book seemed too much of an easy reading. The descriptions about Chicago and The Planetarium were a delight to hear. However, for me, being used to English mystery, this book presented an impossible and inconvencible ending.

Average all the way round

Gay subplot is tortured and the accents by the reader are right out of central casting for B movies.
