About

Mark Jenkins is a self-taught sculptor and installation artist whose work focuses on a variety of urban and social themes, redefining the limits of sculpture both in the public sphere to the more intimate realm of the contemporary gallery setting. The foundation of his artwork is in his specific technique, casting objects as well as bodies using packing tape and plastic wrap. Whether placed in the street or in the gallery, his sculptures alter perceptions of the ordinary and create surreal settings that infallibly elicit an alternative experience. The placement of his artwork always creates a new form of discourse central to space and audience. The theatricality of his work remains a central theme, wherein he uses the gallery space as a performance platform, incorporating the viewers not only as spectators but as actors themselves.

Mark Jenkins was born in 1970 in the United States. Ranked as an international artist since 2006, he lives and works in Washington, DC. He has taken part in international art events including Interferencia (Barcelona, Spain), BELEF (Belgrade, Serbia), Dublin Contemporary (Dublin, Ireland), Living Layers (Rome, Italy), and Nuit Blanche (Paris, France). His recent exhibitions include: From Here to Nowhere at Fabien Castanier Gallery (Miami, United States), Vitality and Verve in the Third Dimension at Long Beach Museum of Art (Long Beach, United States), Ex Situ at Pompidou Centre (Paris, France), Red Never Follows at Saatchi Gallery (London, England) and Anonymous at Perm Museum (Perm, Russia). His most recent public installations include: the Rose Béton biennale/art festival (Toulouse, France), Project84, located on the rooftop of ITV at Southbank (London, England) and The Caretakers, located in front of Laguna Beach City Hall (United States). Mark Jenkins is represented by Fabien Castanier Gallery (Miami, United States).
