[viewpoint - van fanel]
He is an angel, a king, and a dragon. And soon enough, he became one of the heroes during the first Great War on Gaea. His full name is Van de Slanzar Fanel. The male lead in Tenkuu no Escaflowne, he soon became my FAVOURITE male animé character. Hopefully, this will explain why.
Van, though he is only fifteen in the series, is INCREDIBLY stubborn. When I first saw Van, he was fighting a dragon and calling three strangers (Hitomi and company) demons. And even after one of these said strangers helped him (Hitomi, again) he told her NOT to tell anyone that she helped him. (I believe he said he'd be ashamed if his people found out a GIRL helped him...) And the stubborness NEVER changes. Which IS a good thing. It teaches him never to give up, to fight what demons he may have to, and to believe in... well what he believes. But I admire his stubborness. It makes him strong.
As an angel, he is a member of the Draconian race, or the descendant of the Atlanteans. This gives him beautiful wings. *sighs*. That was PROBABLY one of the reasons I fell in love with the show. As a king, well you don't really see that in the series. He is a king who has lost what seems to be everything - his country, his family, and his friends - when Fanelia itself is destroyed. He does gain some of it back... but it takes time, and betrayals to understand.
As the dragon that Zaibach is seeking to destroy so DESPERATLEY... he possesses an AMAZING amount of luck. And skill. And because of this, he always seems to come out alright - even though Sometimes Hitomi's there to help.

I love Van, as a character. He just like a regular teenage boy - if you ignore the whole angel, king and dragon thing. After all, if HE really was real, wouldn't you want to know him?
