This route evokes the long-lasting, profound relationship between two continents separated by a narrow strip of sea. This fascinating journey highlights the strategic crossroads where Africa and Europe look each other in the eye, sharing the foundations of the mythical Pillars of Hercules. Ancient peoples, with expressive simplicity, called this region the “Two River Banks”, due to the proximity and mutual dependence, a region connected by a dense network of pathways which criss-crossed and multiplied the bonds between the peoples. The most essential elements of this fruitful contact have survived: a common cultural and artistic legacy, a special art of living.

And what better guide could we have than to discover and enjoy the pathways followed by the Almoravids and Almohads, the Saharan peoples who, in about the 11th and 12th centuries, forged a vast empire in the western Maghreb and al-Andalus.

After a prelude in Africa, this cultural route begins in Tarifa which together with Algeciras are our starting points. The route discovers the irresistible attractions of the coastline, the countryside and the mountains in the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga, with towns and cities that are true Andalusian delights. Magnificent landscapes, legendary villas and castles, monuments, traditions, the friendly and hospitable people, these are just some of the ingredients of this irresistible route, which takes us through plains and mountains before reaching the magical destination of Granada.
