Biography

Miguel Flores Quirós, “El Capullo de Jerez”, is an artist from the old school, trained since childhood in the school of life and singing twenty-four hours a day. An impressive performer with an absolutely personal style, hr can be identified, without any doubt, even before he starts warming up. He possesses the genuine sound of his land, but approaches the songs in a way that clearly differentiates him from all of his contemporaries. Like the great artists, he was created his own record label. In the flamenco scene of the early 21st century, increasingly monochord, El Capullo is a happily unclassifiable character.

Born on April 3, 1954, on Cantarería Street, in the heart of the Santiago district of Jerez de la Frontera, in a courtyard of neighbourhoods where not a single night would go by without an improvised party. That's where he forged his first musical memories alongside fabulous artists like Terremoto, Tío Borrico or Paquera. He claims that his lyrics and music spring from life itself.

He is in complete agreement with El Sordera, the venerable patriarch of singing in Jerez, who claims that "to learn this, you must stay up all night". Jerezano from head to toe, he feels proud to have inherited in the blood the unique rhythm of the bulerías of his homeland. Few flamencos are as moving as those of El Capullo and which have a natural capacity to always align perfectly with the subject. And when it comes to dancing, you can't overlook it either. "Our singing is different from any other," he states. "The same occurs with dance, we not only tap-dance, we move the hands, the body".

After almost three decades of professional performances, acquiring legacy in hundreds of celebrations and meetings, he is now at the height of his career. He knows that the moment has arrived for taking a major professional leap, and is more focused than ever.

The record world of flamenco is increasingly dependent of commercial designs, and this work of El Capullo - that hasn't locked himself in a studio for many years - is a solid, refreshing breath for flamenco roots. He has recorded what he has desired and the result is an eloquent example of his enormous talent and his extraordinary artistic dimension. Most of the songs are of rhythm, his great speciality. All of them, even the most catchy ones, reflect the best flamenco tradition.
