Virtua Fighter was one of the first fighting game series to use 3D character models instead of the 2D sprites that were used by games like Street Fighter and Art of Fighting. It was originally released in the arcades, but this is an excellent port to the Sega Saturn.
The character models are crude these days, of course. But for the time, they were quite nice and not nearly as blocky as I expected. There is a rather small selection of characters, but they all have unique fighting styles, so none of them feel like they are just copies of each other. Each fighter also has a few short voice clips, though they are mostly just battle sounds and grunts.
Virtua Fighter takes a lot of practice to get good at. You have to time your strikes carefully and it really helps to know your character's moves. Button mashing just won't get you far in this game. In that regard, it is a bit slower paced than the Capcom fighting games. At the same time, however, a skilled player can end a match in just a few strikes. So it can also be pretty intense. Overall, this was a great beginning for 3D fighting games. It's also dirt cheap, so if you have a Sega Saturn, I recommend it.
