If you plan to get just one recording of the three tenors circus, this is the one to have, made when their now tired act was still fresh and new. All three perform both classical and popular material, all three have a few solo numbers particularly apt for showing off what is unique about them, and all three work together smoothly in the international pop medley at the end, when Luciano Pavarotti hams up "O sole mio" and the other two imitate him. José Carreras lacks Plácido Domingo's power and Pavarotti's tonal splendor, but he has some of the best material and he does it justice. His selections include standard operatic arias, Neapolitan song ("Core 'ngrato"), and the all-time Spanish favorite, "Granada." --Joe McLellan

I originally saw this on PBS more than 25 years ago. I have wanted to watch this again for all these years. Finally, after all these years, Decca put out this marvelous DVD of the entire concert. We just finished watching it. The concert itself is beyond fabulous. The video quality on the DVD seems even sharper than watching the broadcast way back then. The digital sound, using the default audio setting of the disc of LPCM uncompressed audio, sampling rate of 48 KHz/second, 16 bit word length, sounds as good as would the CD, especially when played through a good stereo hi-fi amplifier and decent hi-fi speakers. Back in the day, we listened to the sound through one dinky little monophonic speaker in the old tube TV. So, the sound now is much better than it was back in the 1990s.

As we've had the CD of this for over 25 years (which is excellent), we are giving the CD in this set to a friend. Thus we won't be playing this CD, and we therefore cannot review it.

So delightful to see the tenors up close. Almost better than being there live! I'm ordering a second one as the gift and keeping the one I opened for me! It even arrived sooner than expected. Highly recommend this classic to enjoy time and time again!
