The game itself seems to be in good condition. There is a few scratches here and there, but it should work. However I’m giving it 2 stars because in the description it says that it comes with the original case, artwork, and manuscript if applicable. But when I received it I got a case and the game, but nothing else. For $180 I would definitely think it’s applicable to receive the rest. I am willing to change my review to 5 stars if this is fixed. However in the meantime I shall leave my review as is.

Berserk is one of my all-time favorite comic series, and while the animated series was basically just the back story with some parts taken out, I still liked it for what it was. When Sword of the Berserk first hit the Dreamcast, I was pumped. Finally, a game where you could play as Guts, taking out enemies left and right with his massive sword and automatic crossbow, just like in the comic! At first, I really liked the game. But upon playing it more recently, I realized that you only really get to play about 1/3 of the game. The rest is cutscenes. Luckily, you can skip them all, though you'll want to watch them the first time if you care about the story, which does fit in the Berserk time line.

I don't want to ruin any of the plot for when the game's supposed to take place, but when it starts up, you protect a traveling street performer from bandits. Playing as Guts, you hack and slash everyone in your path, leaving buckets of blood behind. As you progress, it turns out that there's a problem with a kind of plant called the Mandragora. These plants can attach themselves to people and take control of them, and Baron Balzac wants Guts to travel to the village where they're protected by a nun, and try to get the necessary item to make a cure. 'not exactly a deep story, and it's more of a sidequest to the plot, but it works, and several major Berserk character make very cool appearances.

Gameplay is simple since the game's an action/hack and slash. You have your standard heavy and light attacks with the Dragon Slayer sword, and can use the automatic crossbow and throwing knives at will, though they don't do anywhere near as much damage as you'd hope. There are special weapons to deal big damage (the Hand Cannon and grenades) and fairy dust to heal Guts when he's low on health. You have a very limited amount of these, so you'll want to save them. Guts can also block, which looks cool since he just holds the Dragon Slayer out in front of him like he's taking cover behind a pillar, and he has an odd slide attack that you're probably never going to use. And of course there's a bar at the top of the screen that fills up as you take damage, and once it's full, Guts enters Berserk mode, and deals much more damage and isn't knocked over as easily [most of the time]. But you make your way through each level, ripping apart baddies, facing an occasional boss and some QTE parts too. Honestly, there's nothing that special about the gameplay- it's your standard hack and slash, but with Guts, and that makes it pretty awesome. All of the enemies and level designs are very much what you'd expect to see in the comics, and even the sounds some of the monsters make seem like they'd be perfect in the last episode of the animated series. There's not much more satisfying than making a pack of rabid mutated dogs explode with a grenade and hearing the weird sounds they make. And the boss fight against a certain Immortal? Easily one of the most awesome boss fights I've ever played.

So if the game's fun, what's the problem? Well, the number of cutscenes is just plain silly. Yes, I know they need them to progress the story, but if I would've had to sit through one more cutscene of Balzac and Guts walking through the castle, I would've screamed. The game takes a little while to complete, but honestly, you're not playing much of it unless you skip the cutscenes. It's nowhere near as bad as the Xenosaga games, but if there were less to sit through and more to play, I would've bumped this up another star for sure. The other problem I had was with jumping. It's hard to explain just how bad some of the jumps are in Guts' Rage, but there were times when I was pretty sure I was going to make it across a cliff or something, and Guts would fall to his doom, making me restart from the last checkpoint, which was usually a good couple of minutes before that point.

Visually, the game looked great for its time. This sucker had tons of production value in the graphics and sound departments, and it's hard to think of any other Dreamcast game at the time that looked and sounded better. The voice acting was very well done too, and Puck's voice actor captured the spirit of the little fairy perfectly. Even secondary characters got good voice actors. And the music? Once I heard the new version of Forces in the beginning, I knew I was going to love the soundtrack, and sure enough, I did. I even went and bought it! Yukes is known for putting a lot of effort in their games, and this was no exception. Zero complaints about graphics, music and voice actors from me.

If you're a big Berserk fan, I highly recommend getting this game if only to get a little more story. For regular action game fans, you can do better, but Sword of the Berserk is still worth checking out at least once. But once you beat it, I don't know how often you'll be going back since there isn't much retail value, and the unlockables are pretty tame.

One of the best games released in the last 15 years, gotta love the gore!

Overall, controls are perfect and the story isn't horrible.

A must have for all Dreamcast collections.

kinda plays like devil may cry. Follows the events that happend in the anime show. the controlls run pretty smoothly considering the dreamcasts controller was one of the worst ever designed. All in all, great game, lots of fun.
