Great game! I spent many hours at the PC playing and it brought back memories to play it again. It takes a little time to learn since you are pretty much in charge of each area of the ship. But it's worth the time.
Here is how to get the sound to work.
The way to fix it is go to subguru.com, in the downloads section you can download a small program called SCSoundEdit Utility. In your 688i Hunter Killer dir is a dir called Sfx, inside Sfx dir is a file called Sfx.agg (This file contains all the sound wav files used by game). Use SCSoundedit to extract all the wav files out of the sfx.agg file into the same Sfx dir, the sound will then work ok.
Once I did this it works 100% on my Windows 10 machine.
Have fun!

I used to have the copy of this game on CD but lost it a while back and decided to buy a digital copy on amazon. The only problem I have was that some of the original sound and music in the game seems to be missing. When you order the submarine to submerge or order a speed change, there used to be a crew member that does a repeat back of your order. However it's not this copy of the game. There is a small text box on the bottom of the screen that tells you that the crew acknowledges your order (but it was in the original as well) . It might be a minor nitpicking but it is annoying if you had played the original game.

I loved this computer game back in the 90s. When microsoft up dates its program this game, became riddled with bugs.
I though it would work, but its just as bad as many years ago.

I was in aviation anti-submarine warfare with the Navy back in the day. As such I found many of the tools used in the simulation pretty good and it was interesting being on the other side of the thermocline. The various sounds were also pretty authentic. As it was written for Windows 98, it is just a little buggy, but nothing so distracting that you don't want to run it. The major problem is that the Amazon download does not unzip the audio portion of the simulation. To do that you will need to do the following (it's easy BTW!)

1. Download a copy of SCSoundEdit utility from (someplace you trust)

2. Run it and open the .\Sfx\sfx.agg file below the 688(i) software's installation directory. That is to say, the "sfx.agg" file in the "Sfx" folder below that installation directory. On my system, that is in: C:\Program Files\Sonalysts Combat Simulations\688I Hunter_Killer\Sfx\

3. Extract all the .WAV files from the SFX.AGG file. SCSoundEdit utility extracts them into the "Sfx" folder. This is where you want them.

Now, launch the game and all the sound effects work, including crew voices, etc.

This is an engaging and complicated game. A sub-simmer would love it but it appears Amazon has only partial (majority but not complete) files for us to download. The game is playable and the music plays but the sound effects - equipment noise, switch clicking, crew call back of orders, "TORPEDO IN THE WATER!!", distant explosions, listening at the sonar station is completely silent, even the creak of your own boat under pressure - are all missing. They are supposed to be there. Also, something is missing that keeps you from saving your missions.

This is a very interesting and entertaining game if you like slow paced laid back games that don't require a lot of joysticking.
