One of the most exciting things on the promo for the Gamecube version of this game is the inclusion of Link from the Legend of Zelda series. The inclusion is amazing given how Nintendo is so protective of their IPs but i feel like this game does his character justice with balancing him out and making him feel natural in this game.
The multiplayer is the standard multiplayer experience you can expect from most fighting games in this era. No online, but Local. The gameplay is fun enough that you can spend hours training or facing off with friends, trying new characters, weapons, and combos.
Something that isnt necessary but is much appreciated by someone like me is that they have a gallery included where you can unlock and view concept art for the game and character models. These will need to be unlocked by playing the game, whether is be specific character story modes or in game achievements. Overall, this is an amazing game. Im not much of a fighting game fan myself, but even link's inclusion is strong enough to want to bring newcomers to see what this game is about and its fun enough for casuals, while also being a deep enough game to have seen serious competition if ESPORTS were more popular back in the day. Definitely a great buy!

The graphics (especially the 3D backgrounds) have been kicked up a notch. The gameplay is faster and a bit more streamlined (Guard Impact moves have been simplified, and it's now more apparent when moves have special properties like Guard Break or Auto-Counter). Many characters received changes to their move lists (some larger than others, but mostly for the better). There are also two entirely new characters: Raphael, a fencing noblemen, and Talim, a Filipina fighter who uses bladed tonfas.
The home version brings back everyone from Soul Calibur: Sophitia, Seung Mina, Lizardman, Rock (now named "Berzerker"), and Hwang (now called "Assassin") all make their return. The last three have to be unlocked in the "extra" Weapon Master missions, which can be accessed once you beat all the standard ones. Also, fan favorite Cervantes (from Soul Edge, the game before Soul Calibur 1) is back. The Gamecube version also features Link (from The Legend Of Zelda), although some people have derided the "bonus" console characters as a marketing gimmick (the more the merrier, I say). This brings the total, I think, to 23, which is a *lot* by any measure.
Speaking of the Weapon Master mode, it returns from the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur 1. In this mode, you progress through a number of increasingly challenging "missions" (basically, fights against the computer where you are often handicapped in some way, or where you fight more than 1 battle in a row). A new addition are "dungeon" missions, where you navigate your way around an overhead map, fighting enemies in each "room". Playing these missions lets you unlock the hidden characters and 10(!) weapons available for each one, as well as several artwork galleries, extra costumes for most characters, and the game's alternate modes (such as Time Attack, and the demo modes). It's also fairly entertaining, and there's even a cheesy storyline that goes along with it.
The GCN version supports Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound (the desert level with the lightning storm going on in the background is very cool), and 480p progressive scan (in both 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 modes). I don't have an HD television, but I hear it looks fantastic.
I have run into the occasional bit of graphical slowdown, mostly when the game tries to throw in tons of flashy lighting effects on the larger levels. This is apparently a problem in all the console versions of SC2, but I must emphasize that it's very minor.
It's likely that Namco has made more gameplay tweaks to the US release (the Japanese version has been out for some time now, and improved on some of the arcade version's problems), but it will take a little while to figure out what they've done. Nothing has leapt out at me, but I also haven't had it very long.
The biggest complaint you could really register about the game is that it's more evolutionary than revolutionary, and that the Dreamcast version of SC1 a few years ago looked almost as good and ran smooth as silk. But as others have pointed out, this is more of a testament to the amazing Dreamcast hardware than a fault of the next-gen systems.
Soul Calibur II is certainly the premier fighting game on the GCN right now, and I recommend it for anyone who likes the genre.
