Collecting and repairing consoles is my hobby, and this had to be on my shelf, simply for the ownership status. The device is quite interesting, giving the owner responsibility of a digital pet, much like those old Tomagochi's. I've found the most entertaining aspect was utilizing it with Final Fantasy VIII, raising my own chocobo! I would recommend this item to semi-serious gamers and collectors, as I'd hate to see it tossed around on the floor and forgotten by a 10 year old.

While FF8 is the most well known localized game to keep compatibility with this little beauty you're really better off buying the Japanese games that are compatible for more fun. This is actually good for a Digimon fanatic: there are 3 games called Pocket Digimon World (but each has different Digimon to obtain) that you use the pocketstation 90% of the time for. You could yank the battery out and use it as a regular memory card, but that's such a waste! There are actually 4 colors you can have (although 2 of them are limited edition): White,Crystal,Black, and Pink. The black one was released in a special box set with the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories(called Shin Duel Monsters in Japan) and the pink one was released with a dating sim (I forget the name). I find it kind of ironic that both titles were produced by Konami. The only annoying thing is that with the v-pet like games they go to bed at 9 PM and wake up at 7 AM. It was never released outside of Japan due to being unable to keep up with the demand. It ALMOST made it to US shores though, which is why some games kept the functionality in. Believe me when I say that it's not like the VMU AT ALL.it uses IR to communicate with other pocketstations (and if you have the Wonderswan game Digital Partner and the IR accessory attached to the system battle Digimon),has a programmable alarm, the Playstation logo etched on the screen and only 5 buttons. All in all a nice little peripheral, but I only recommend getting it if you have compatible game(s)

This little gadget is the coolest thing for Final Fantasy 8. The ID I got with mine for the Chicobo was a low rank 7 ID. The last 3 digits of the serial is your ID rank number. With a quick mod using a Palm, I managed to change my ID to rank 1 (ID 211, best ID in the game) and get the best items in the game. I even got Chicobo leveled up to level 4, which in turn makes chicobo perform the summon "Chocobocle" which causes over 10,000 points damage. I have so many ribbons, friendships, and other items I'm literally tripping over them. I even got holy wars and heros from the thing. If your looking to master Final Fantasy 8, this is the item to do it.

This may not be the most practicle PS itme to get, but it sure is fun. I own 3 of them. I moved to japan and found a TON of games that will work with this little marvel. anything from dating sims to sports games, to adventure games, this little baby will work. And you get to play the games you save. I got mine at a used video game store, so they were worth it. i am actully looking to get 2 or so more. If you can get one of these babys, i say go for it. dont listen to the nay sayers on this one, find a pocketstation and have fun.

Okay so the main reasons I like this thing is because hardly anyone in the States has one, it's Japanese and it's cute. There are some nice games I have for it but mine usually just has Carbuncle from Puyo Puyo on it.
If you're one of those special effects film or overpowered computer fans then you won't want this. Me, I love classic films because of the great acting you arn't able to find in today's cinema, I still have my old TI-99/4A for it's teaching capabilities and I love my PocketStation for catching the attentions of some really cute girls and helping me get a few dates too.

I Live in the US and I would definitly love to get my hands on one of these things. Don't just buy it because you want it for no good reason. On FF8 you definitly need one of these!
