Product Description

Napoleon: Total War is the newest chapter in the critically acclaimed Total War series from The Creative Assembly. In a vividly detailed, war-torn world, players assume the role of Napoleon during his extraordinary rise to power or play as his enemies in an attempt to rewrite history. This epic RTS adventure follows Napoleon’s devastating path of conquest and victory through nearly two decades of warfare from the early Italian campaign to the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon: Total War also marks the single biggest innovation in the history of the franchise with an integrated multiplayer campaign that allows two players to fight for control of the campaign map and the fate of Europe.

I have been a fan and purchaser of the Total War series of games since they were first released.
Napoleon Total War is the best, bar none.

It is hands down the best historical strategy game I have ever played and I have played them all.

I cut my teeth on the old map and counter board games, graduated to computer games first on the Apple Macintosh MkI. Then to an IBM Clone 486 with a whopping 1 meg of memory.

Those are my bonifides. If you are a first person shooter fan, read no further.
If you like the mindless produce them as fast as you can type of "strategy" games go get a coke or latte'.

We are talking strategy game here. You gotta run an economy, build an army, maintain political relations, and a viable trade network to achieve your goals. Fail one and you fail completely.
No money means no army.

This all sounds familiar if you know the series. But what I never had much passion for is online gaming.

What they have brought to the table with NTW is the game drop in concept. If you are playing a campaign game and you have it set to allow it, an anomymous or not so anomymous gamer can drop into your othewise private campaign and play the part of an opposing general, replacing the AI opponent for just that one battle. This is way cool. One con to balance the pro. Some pantie waist, egg shell egoed little twits will drop into your game and instead of being men, when the going gets tough, drop out of the game, tanking the recent battle. You will have to refight it. I have encountered more than a few momma's boys who suffer from too much self esteem building in grade school to take a good ass whipping in game land. Poor diaper wearers. I fear for their future in the real world.

The online gaming of ranked games etc is rife with this ilk too. Too many looking to exploit the system, and circumvent the spirit of war gaming. You try to play true to the period armies, idiots!

Instead the online gamers will load their armies with ahistorical units, Super commando like Riflemen and Jagers, who in reality were rare and expensive units and whose rate of fire was half that depicted in the game. They "corner camp" that is sit in a corner of the game map making the attacker approach right into the teeth of their force, again violatiing the spirit of the game.

The online forums are all abuzz about exploits and the best makeup of an army. Too bad the programers did not see fit to put constraints on what could constitute an army along historical lines.

Other than these petty complaints, I have had a blast playing the game. I pre ordered and Steam and have been playing it a lot. Aside from the frustrations with the immature online gamers, it has been very rewarding.

Graphics are superb. One caveat. Make sure you computer hardware and internet connection are above average. I ahve a dual quad core 64 bit machine and an optical internet connection and it works smoothe as butter.

The game looks great and runs fairly smooth with only 2 ctd's so far.
It just isn't fun and the battle mechanics are questionable at best.

As an owner of all of the Total war series and all expansion packs and DLC, this game just doesn't have the factor that the other titles with the exception of Empire Total War possess, which is the "fun" factor.
This game is more of a chore to play than anything else and you'll find it frequently cheating you which is just irritating.

I swore that Empire Total War was going to be the last Total War game I bought but like an idiot, and because of some good reviews and being a Nepoleonic history buff and an oldtime Avalon Hill hexagon grognard I made the mistake of buying this
mess thinking it would be fun, well,...it isn't.

I give this game two stars, 1 for the production value of the graphics and another because I can feel poor Napoleon rolling over in his grave. Avoid this game if you're a true old time tabletop wargamer, and if you just want something mindless and dumb to play buy it.

After further play I have to lower my star rating from 2 to 1. This game is terrible. Be warned.
I was thinking of buying Shogun2 Total War but after this mess, no way.

I'm not much of a gamer. I'm a fan of Napoleonic war fiction like the Richard Sharpe series by Cornwell, (as well as the Hornblower and Aubrey / Maturin series).
I didn't expect a lot, but I kind of imagined being able to play with tin soldiers. So I wasn't even concerned with the game's AI or using this in multiplayer mode. I just wanted to set up a battle and let it help me imagine the scale of things.
I think this comes close to doing that, but fell short of my expectations.
The thing that bothered me the most about this game (and why I stopped playing it) were the controls. I played the tutorial and several battles and never really felt that the controls were "solid". Doing things like moving units or making an artillery battery fire always seemed like I wasn't sure I really made the move. The controls use a lot of icons that I found confusing.
I also thought the graphics were "okay". I have a decent graphics card and played at a decent resolution, but found that most of the units on the field were hard to distinguish from each other (so small) and often blend into the terrain. I guess I was dissapointed, because I know there was a lot of detail put into this- the units have names and the officers are listed by name- but at the scale I was looking at, it just looks like a bunch of hats.
I know there are many people that enjoy this game, I read several reviews before I bought this game. This just wasn't what I wanted.
I will also "second" what a lot of people have said. I bought this from Amazon so I could have the physical media (the DVD). I find it annoying that I have to use Steam, and it has to download a bunch of stuff despite my having the DVD. It downloads something like a gigabyte or so, which is painful for me because I have a slower connection with a download cap. Games like this should make me want to own a PC for gaming, but I could come out farther ahead with a console, cheaper and less hassle.

I bought this along with Empire: Total War and Total War: Shogun 2, and I already owned Rome: Total War and Medieval 2: Total War. Every single one of these is a good game. They all have some minor flaws, but they get better with each entry, though Medieval 2 is still my favorite.

Unfortunately, this game wasn't what I was expecting. I knew that it would be set during the period of Napoleon's conquests, and I knew that it would be different from the others that I'd play. But I just haven't enjoyed it.

I'd played it a small amount before I bought it to see if I'd like it, and I did, but once I owned it, the fun factor just went away.

I am however going to give it another chance, as I've only really played for a few hours.
