    forearm pronation
Flat keyboards cause painful forearm pronation

Pronation in the forearm and wrist occurs when typing with your palms face down towards the worksurface. Sustained pronation puts pressure on the forearm muscles and tissues which reduces blood circulation and can lead to fatigue and repetitive strain injuries (“RSI”).

Research demonstrates that a moderate elevation of the thumb side of the hand dramatically reduces the pressure on the forearm muscles.

    What is tenting?

Backed by extensive research and testing

For 7 months the Atlas IPS firm conducted an independent study investigating the impact of the Freestyle keyboard’s unique split design on posture, comfort, and performance with 80 employees at a large U.S. software company.

    Findings:

    • 100% were back to full productivity after a brief adaption period
    • 96% preferred the Freestyle over their conventional keyboard
    • 79% experienced a decrease in neck discomfort
    • 50% experienced a decrease in ulnar deviation

    Looks cool
It looks very cool, but it's hard to type fast because some of the keys are on the wrong side in my opinion. Also, I wish the keys were flatter. Feels like I went back in time and took like the first keyboard ever made and then split it in half. Also, the 'L' key on mine is defective. You have to press it juuuust right, otherwise, after I have typed my whole paragraph, I have to go back and make sure all the 'l's showed up where they should have. I'm thinking about returning it, but it looks really cool, so I'm not sure. I'm switching back to my old keyboard for a while to test myself and see if I miss using this one.

I've been typing for going on 30+ years, and this keyboard has saved me from aggravating any repetitive stress fatigue. The split style is perfect for my wrists, so I have it for both my office keyboard and my work from home keyboard. Yes, it's pricey but, to me, it's worth it to keep my hands functional as a writer and an office worker.

I'd definitely recommend it for touch typists - hunt & peckers may have a hard time with the split.

Very adjustable ergonomic keyboard which allows you to independently set the tilt angle and the distance between the left and right sides of the keyboard. This is very important to me after two arm surgeries due to repetitive motion injuries. Keys only require as light touch and and not very load as some keyboards can be.
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2012
    Style: PC LayoutVerified Purchase
Anyone who sits at a computer all day should consider an ergonomic keyboard. Ideally you should try this BEFORE you start having pain in your wrists, or elbows, or outer forearm tendons, or shoulders, or lower back. It's amazing what a difference there is when you don't have to hold your entire upper body at an unnatural angle for hours on end. Over the past 15 years, I have used several different brands and models of ergonomic keyboards, and this one is in my top 3 favorites. It has many nice features, including:
    - soft quiet touch keys, very responsive (not stiff or sticky)
    - able to keep up with fast touch typing speed
    - tenting feet and wrist supports already installed in place when you open the box
    - ability to adjust left hand/right hand portions independently of each other (height, angle, position, proximity)
    - comfortable wrist rests
    - plug and play (no drivers or discs or installation of any sort needed)

But since I'm a perfectionist, here are the things I WISH this keyboard had, which would get it a higher rating:
    - ability to tent at a higher angle (the choices are only 5, 10, and 15 degrees, and I prefer 30-40 at least);
    - THE NUMBER SIX SHOULD BE ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE KEYBOARD - THIS IS A HUGE FLAW FOR ME;
    - programmable (re-mappable) keys, so I could personalize it more & swap key locations & set up macros
    - longer cord so keyboard can be further away from PC
    - numeric keypad should come with the keyboard, for the price (instead of being sold separately for another $60 or so)
    - a 5-button configuration for home/end/delete/page up/page down, rather than spreading them over a vertical row on the right-hand edge of the keyboard

But making the switch from ANY keyboard to a new one is no fun during the transition period, so it's likely that some of my current "dislikes" will fade as I get more familiar with the new layout.

[Except I will NEVER be able to type the number 6 in my left hand smoothly. It's amazing how automatically my right index finger taps the blank plastic space to the left of the letter "y".... Since I will next be ordering the separate numeric keypad, I'll just have to use that for numbers, I suppose.]

    UPDATE MAY 28, 2015:
I upgraded my initial review from 3 stars to 4, because I have now been happily using this keyboard every day for two-and-a-half years, and can't imagine using something else for work. All the things I originally liked about it are still true. But all the "perfectionist" items I noted above still bother me. One more complaint: it takes up a TON of space, so I can just barely fit the keyboard, the numeric keypad, AND my Logitech T650 touchpad on my keyboard tray (even though I ordered the largest under-desk-mount keyboard tray I could find (the Humanscale 500 Big, which is 27" wide and 11" deep). Since I have to crowd all 3 of those items on the keyboard tray, I can't separate the 2 parts of this keyboard as much as I would otherwise do. But overall I can make it work - and I have not had ANY wrist, elbow, or forearm pain since I switched to these ergonomic items. Even if this particular keyboard ends up not working for you, I strongly recommend trying several other ergonomic keyboards - they are definitely the way to go.

An outstanding keyboard!!! I recently broke my wrist but needed to continue working so went looking for a keyboard that would accommodate not being able to rotate, tilt or flex my left wrist. This keyboard was exactly what I was looking for!

The construction is as good as the best out there, except maybe the old IBM Model M mechanical keyboards. Mine arrived with the wrist rest and left-right tilt accessory kit installed. I wouldn't buy this keyboard without it. I tilted the left section full (15 degrees) and fiddled with it's rotation until they home keys were under my fingers without having to tilt, rotate or twist my wrist. After a few minutes getting used to the slight variation in the location of some of the lesser used keys I was able to work as quickly as if I hadn't had a titanium T plate and half a dozen screws recently installed in my distal radius bone. I definitely recommend this keyboard to anyone needing a keyboard to adjust to your hand(s) position. I also found it more comfortable for my uninjured hand versus the typical square layout or even the Microsoft Natural keyboard I normally use.

After a week's use I can find only two things that might improve it. The first is if there was a way to adjust the tilt of each half from front to back. I did this by stacking 3x5 cards under it but a front to back tilt adjustment would be well worth it to go along with the left to right tilt that is built into the accessory kit. The other improvement might not be enjoyed by all, but I really like the tactile feel of the old IBM Model M mechanical keyboards. If Kinesis offered this keyboard with front to back tilt (in addition to the current left to right tilt) and mechanical keys I'd have to rate it a 10 out of 5!!! But even with these potential improvements left off, this is an excellent keyboard for the wrist movement challenged at a fair price. I'd buy it again and recommend it highly.

Was having shoulder and arm discomfort so i researched some ergonomic keyboards. Only had it for a month but loving it so far and my pain has lessened. I have the plug in one so no need for bluetooth set up - just plug and play. I like that i didn't have to set up the mounting system it was just ready to go!
Takes a little bit of getting used to (muscle memory of certain keys being a certain distance) but well worth the investment.

The product is really good. Took some some days to get fully adapted to the new configuration, but now i can see how uncomfortable was the previous setup.

The positioning lemme adjust my shoulders position, I’m no longer feeling them tired in the end of the day.
