In
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the Video Game, Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information.

Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different, but equally unavoidable adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane’s chocolates. And then there’s Hermione, simmering with jealously, but determined not to show her feelings. Yet as romance blossoms throughout Hogwarts, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

Gameplay
Like earlier video game releases in the
Harry Potter franchise, the action in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince the Video Game revolves around the exploration of Hogwarts and the action that results from what you uncover. During their adventures, players will have a chance to engage in exciting wizard duels, mix and brew magical ingredients in potions class and take to the air to lead the Gryffindor Quidditch team to victory. Players may even get sidetracked by Ron’s romantic entanglements as they journey towards a dramatic climax and discover the identity of the Half-Blood Prince.

I’m a HP fanatic. I own all the boxes, movies, and XBOX games. Any time I can escape into Hogwarts is a great time. I love the detail in these games. I’ve never been able to complete all the achievements. But I still play these all these years later.

If you have played Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, then consider yourself to have played this game. Mediocre and unimaginative would also be a good description. If you haven't played OotP, you might want a little more info. The gameplay is free-roaming environment of Hogswarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It has been expanded and is easy to get lost, but thankfully they have included a guiding system in the form of "Nearly-headless Nick" to escort you when you want. The story events follow the movie exactly, not the book, so don't look for any new information here. Three additions to the Harry Potter video game franchise is dueling, Quidditch, and potion mixing. Dueling existed in OotP in a limited and annoying form. In Half Blood Prince, dueling is quickly repetitive and has a good learning curve. Only once or twice did I come close to losing a match. Quidditch sounds like it would be an excellent side quest doesn't it? If you like pseudo-roller-coaster-jump-through-hoops-and-avoid-the-odd-obstacle-while-adhering-to-a-mysterious-hidden-timer game, then you are in for a treat. If not, it quickly becomes tiresome. The last new addition, potion mixing, is akin to playing Guitar Hero in that you are are pouring, mixing, adding to, and burning until the potion reaches a certain color, then you have to stop in time or ruin the mixture. If you have not played the previous Harry Potter games, this would be a good place to start. It was awesome to get to walk the grounds of Hogwarts, but this time around it was not new to me. The spell casting system is limited to certain items and under certain conditions, you can't run around casting "Stupefy" on everyone hoping to start a fight, or starting fires on the tapestry, for example. My recommendation is to rent if aren't a die-hard HP fan, and stay away if you don't like HP, which is something you would have done anyway.

Order of the Phoenix is in my opinion a better and easier game. Half-Blood Prince has Harry collecting mini-crests by casting spells on items and finding whole crests around the castle. You are able to explore the castle and its grounds at will, but still have missions to complete. This game adds Quidditch and Potions Club, which are fun but very frustrating to perfect. Another addition is Dueling Club, where you can have a wizard duel with each house's champions.

This game is not an easy 100% completion game because you must have perfect duels, Quidditch games, and perfect brews of all potions (there are many to brew) to earn all in-game badges and achievements. I also encountered glitches with some of the crests that made them inaccessible on my playthrough.

I bought the game at a decent price. I didn't have to wait too long to receive it, and it was practically in new condition, it came with the manual as well. I give the price, shipping & handling, and wait time for the product 5 stars and the actual game an overall 4 stars.

Great looking case. Very well packaged and shipped on time. Useful guide booklet included. I only wish there had been a game disc too because all this packaging and instruction seems a bit wasted on a game that wasn't included.
