This is going to be a detailed and long review, with some spoilers and game play tips, hints, and maybe brief, scattered walk through parts. The very beginning of the game CAN be frustrating, but make no mistake, this is, and continues to be, one of my favorite games of all time. In the very beginning you are asked a few questions before you actually start game play. The only answer that matters is to the question do you prefer day or night. If you choose day, you start with Agumon, but if you select night, you receive Gabumon. Digivolving into a powerful Champion (Greymon or Garurumon) is very difficult from the onset. A Digimon's Digivolution is dependent on absolutely EVERYTHING you do. When they sleep, how much you feed them, where they go to the bathroom, how much you train, how many enemies you fight, happiness/sadness, discipline, and its Virus scale. Also taken into consideration are age and weight of your Digimon. Smaller weighted Digimon tend to Digivolve to smaller, leaner Digimon, while heavier ones Digivolve to bigger ones.
To obtain certain Digimon (namely powerful Champions, and certainly Ultimate Level Digimon) some factors must be met exactly, while for others, it sometimes doesn't matter at all. You're sort of at a disadvantage in the very beginning starting with a Rookie. The Digivolution time is as follows...any other time in the game you start from a Digi-egg, which hatches and gives you the fresh form. 6 hours later you have an In-Training form, 1 day later you have a Rookie, 3 days later you have a Champion, and IF you raise an Ultimate, it usually happens around age 14. I often found my first Champion to be Tyrannomon, which is AWFUL because he eats too much and food is hard to come by in the beginning.
Most Digimon you would recognize from Season 1 are able to recruited to File Island, the city you're trying to rebuild and restore peace to. Most Digimon you have to defeat in Battle, but some require other tasks. Sometimes you have to complete a task, or even battle more than once. Seadramon, for instance, has to be caught on a Fishing Pole at Dragon Eye Lake. Mojyamon only comes once you've traded nine separate items to him. Some come to the city simply by being spoken to. As the game progresses, your Tamer level goes up. It can go from 1 to 10 (and yes it CAN drop, based on care mistakes, losing fights, and other various reasons). The higher it gets, the better Digimon you can raise, particularly Ultimates.
Each time a Digimon Digivolves, its lifespan increases naturally. I've noticed Andromon, Phoenixmon, Piximon, and MetalGreymon (YES, you can get him, along with other difficult Ultimates like Skull Greymon) tend to live the longest. I had a Metal Greymon live to be 30 once, but 24-28 seems to be average, with prime care. Some Digimon Digivolve to other forms after dying or losing fights...Angemon can Digivolve to Devimon after losing two battles if his happiness is at zero. Birdramon can Digivolve to Phoenixmon after losing a Battle. Raising a Virus scale to 10 Digivolves ANY Digimon to a Sukamon. Any In-Training Digimon can Digivolve to Kunemon (only way to get him) by sleeping under his tree after defeating him.
Also, there are Digivoultion Items, for example, a Grey Claw automatically Digivolves your Digimon to Greymon. You must give a Digivolution Item to the Digimon the direct level below the level of the Digivolution Item (ie give a Grey Claw ONLY to a Rookie, or you wasted it). When using an Item like this, the lifespan of your Digimon does NOT increase, but if you manage to raise an Ultimate from said Champion, lifespan WILL incrase.
The game has several challenging features. Ogremon eventually joins you but you have to fight him four separate times throughout the game. You have to be a certain type Digimon to enter certain places (Data, Virus, or Vaccine) ie a Vaccine type can only enter the Ice Sanctuary (where you recruit Angemon) and a Virus type can only enter Grey Lord's Mansion (where you find Devimon, Myotismon, and Skull Greymon). Some Digimon only show up at certain times of day, like Piximon only shows up twice a day, twice a month. Some areas are only accessible at certain times of day as well. In Factory Town you can't recruit Andromon or Giromon except during a specific time.
Once you finally obtain 100% (you can check with the leader Jijimon in his house at any time) you can't recruit anyone else. But the game still has plenty of replay value, filling in your Digivolution chart, obtaining all the Items in the game, and just becoming the best. I still enjoy it and highly recommend it!
The game was pretty rare to begin with. It was one of my favorite games as a kid, but I had to rent it to play it. Not only was it hard to find... it was hard to convince parents to pay for!
So, like the title says... if you're cool with dropping $45 to have a piece of Nostalgia... DO IT! It's the same Digimon World you loved as a child. It's challenging enough to make you cringe as an adult, and if you find one in great condition (like the one this seller sent me - cheers!) then you can be sure you have a little investment as well. Trust me, after nearly 10 years of waiting for this game to have some significant price drop... I still shelled out $50 for it. I only see it becoming more valuable over time.
You raise digimon etc etc Im sure alot of people already explained that in these comments :) ..But it is really a great game. The ending was almost life changing for me (if That's not an over statement ) and the story is not too thorough, but it is simple and charming. Very tough at times to get through the battles, especially the last dungeon, but the frustration is well worth it! You have to save the city, so hurry up and go play this game :) I know it's old, but older games are the best. Thank yall for reading, it was my pleasure reviewing this
It arrived early.
Disc in better condition than I expected it to be with "acceptable" tag.
I've done all the things so far that would normally freeze a game, and so far it hasn't.
It has worked with my memory cards and my GameShark.
So far, extremely happy with this product. Thanks!
