Despite their 20-plus years in the music business, One Night in Paris demonstrates that Depeche Mode are by no means dinosaurs of synth-infused rock. Directed by longtime artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn, the concert footage concisely captures the atmosphere of the show that was seen by over 1.5 million fans in 2001. Though there is an obsessive focus on the half-naked Dave Gahan and the "fallen angel" Martin Gore throughout, at various points the camera withdraws to expose a huge screen at the back of the stage. Combined with the angry stage lighting, the projection films (which include footage of a goldfish swimming in a tank for "In Your Room") provide an added epic feel. Predominantly made up of songs from Exciter, the show also includes old favorites such as "Enjoy the Silence" and "Personal Jesus." The visual and audio quality is excellent, and the bonus material on the second DVD (particularly the interviews with the band and tour crew) neatly complements the first disc. --John Galilee

I’ve had this concert for a while now. We just pulled it out and re-watched it last night on my new XL television. I’ve been a bit reluctant because I was just absolutely sure there would be bars on the sides… and you know, time takes its toll. I was completely wrong. I sat enthralled the whole time, it fills the screen, the recording is superb. The set is striking. Dave is in his absolute prime at this show. His voice is superb, his performance is top notch as always. He is a effing rockstar in this concert. He comes out on the stage like a prize fighter. From the second it starts it’s on and amazing. On top of that the song selection is absolutely perfect. It was an amazing treat to watch Depeche Mode 101, and within 24 hours watch One Night in Paris. What an amazing progression by a phenomenal band. As for the naysayers, when are they not around with Depeche Mode? Ignore the trolls.

A LOT of people have mentioned that David's voice was "off" (to put it nicely) at this show...so much so that I was almost prepared to cringe when watching it.

the truth is..THEY ARE WRONG.

I am a singer myself, and have a nearly "perfect pitch",and I can't BELIEVE how many critics there are here, that most likely couldn't sing to save their lives.Yet they insist hus was vocals were a mess.

Guess what..They were fabulous vocals.if you had to sing, pour your heart out,run around the stage, dance,Yell ""C'mon" ! to amp up & connect to the audience between the verses (like we all LOVE),ANYONE would hit a slight sharp or flat now and then.

David sounded just like he always has..AMAZING,giving us WAY MORE here than just..notes in not picky "perfect pitch".

I loved this concert and DVD..even MORE so than "devotional".

And the boys more than rocked that town inside out on this fine Paris evening. And we are fortunate and lucky that it had been documented in this most wonderful, and well put together production.

"Whah..He sounds pitchy".-Babies.

I have not seen this DVD but I attended the show in Paris therefore I already know it is a 5+. I have been a huge Depeche Mode fan since I was about eleven years old and have gone to all of the shows in Denver since then. I have a friend in France who shares my love for the band and he bought me two tickets to the show in Paris, so my friend and I took a two week European vacation and finished the trip with the mode show the night before our flight home. What a way to end an awesome trip. The fact that the stadium was literally packed full of Depeche Mode fans from all over the world felt so awesome, everyone singing along, that is definately an experience that I will never forget. Although I had seen the mode several times at home, the energy that they put out for this show was amazing. The vibe of the whole place was inexplicable. My new goal is to see Depeche Mode in Europe each time they tour, so I hope they tour soon because I need another vacation!

An overwhelmingly beautiful performance from the greatest band in the world. Anton Corbijn is a genius and a perfect collaborator for them always, but his devotion to them shines above and beyond with this. I have never felt so much like I was standing in the actual crowd of a live performance than I did watching this concert film. Dave's energy is electric and you can just see, even feel him shining with excitement. I can not recommend this enough for any devotees.

For me, this is naybe THE one Depeche Mode release to avoid using any money on. First off, there's the issue with the performance - like many others have noted, Dave's voice is completely wasted here. Here more growls than sings the songs, he can't get anywhere near the original key for most songs, and he frequently has problems even hitting the right notes. There's the odd exception with "When The Body Speaks" which actaully sounds very good, but songs like "Personal Jesus", "Black Celebration" and "Never Let Me Down Again" are almost butchered.

It doesn't help matters that sound is really poor on my DVD. I don't know if different versions exist, I bought mine when it was released back in 2002 (so that would make it original edition) and the audio sounds like someone stuffed my speakers with pillows - it's muffled, dry, and the vocal is often way buried in the mix (maybe an attempt to cover up the issues with that). The audio sounds decidedly off - something I have not experienced with any of my other DVDs.

It's a bit of a pity, because the DVD features a nice selection of Depeche Mode highlights, including not only the major hits but also favorites such as "Halo", "It Doesn't Matter Two" and "Black Celebration". But the performance is so poor and the audio so bad that I can't recommend this to anybody. If the audio had been good, I would have given 2 stars, so maybe there are later versions that sound better. Go buy the stellar "Devotional" video and the thrilling "101" CDs instead.

This performance does not match the brilliant Devotional, or even the choppy 101. This is DM in the post-Alan era, Dave has cleaned up and the show is stripped down to the bone (heh). Dave is not in the best voice, and the show lacks the excitement and drama of Devotional.

I love DM, just want to turn the clock back to 1993.

This wasn't by far the best concert film I have ever seen, but it was one of the best concerts.
Not the best film because of the sound quality, which I felt could have been much better and the editing and camera angles.
One of the best concerts because of Depeche Mode's performances, their wide range of hits. Can't really go wrong there.
The dvd itself is another story. The bonus items and added features make this entirely worthwhile for DM fans. It's reasonably priced for a two-disc set and well packaged.
Fans won't be disappointed.

If I could give 10 stars to this movie I would, because it's one of the band's greatest concerts ever. Massive energy and perfect performance! As for the service, it got to my house way before the date expected so I'd say perfect!
