Editorial Reviews

This package features stunningly remastered sound (even the earliest cuts from 1938 are hiss free, full-bodied and remarkably clear), along with a classy 16-page booklet with rare photos and detailed session liner notes. It's not the final word on the prolific and multi-talented musician who some consider the most influential jazzman ever, but is an excellent overall portrait of Satchmo, covering numerous highlights in the career of this legendary American artist. Hip-O. 2006.

There's nothing like waking up to Louie singing "It's a Wonderful World!" I play it on our outdoor speakers at about 9 a.m. every morning. My neighbors love it! "Gone Fishing" is another favorite that I also play loudly outdoors as the boaters pass by our canal on their way to fish. Make your own memories and let Louie live on!

One of his greatest albums of all time and one of the best trumpeters of all times priceless

An absolute treasure, with outstanding sound that brings the great instrumental and vocal prowess of the greatest jazz man ever front and center. Louis has long been recognized as the most influential trumpeter ever, but his vocal talents have often been overlooked. Great legends like Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra often acknowledged their being influenced by the vocals of old Satch, which puts him in pretty good company. "What a wonderful world" was made for Louis, as the words summed up his view of the world and the people in it. Others recorded it but you hear that song and you think of Pops. And to be reminded of the incomparable trumpet master that he was, give a listen to this 1938 remake of "Struttin' with some barbeque", which even surpasses the Hot Five 1928 version. All in all, a fine compilation tribute to a true immortal whose legend only continues to grow.

What can be said about Louis Armstrong that hasn't already been said. If you're an American you love his music I feel like me you grew up with it. I think all of the music he ever did was his greatest hits so if you want to create a collection skip this album and get all of the rest. There's a four disc collection of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald that is quite outstanding.

As for audio files you may not find this to be outstanding, some songs being better than others as you expect on the greatest hits compilation, but still overall pretty good.

We bought for my wife's dad, he's less grouchy now that he has something to occupy his time. Bought with 3 other CD's.

Should have been packed with greater care. Louis Armstrong is unimpeachable. Play it a gain, Mr. Armstrong.

Even if you are very young, you have probably heard at least one song by Louis Armstrong, probably "What a Wonderful World." Also, if you are not that into early jazz, you might not be interested in collecting individual original jazz recordings. For such people, this is the perfect Louis Armstrong collection. The album contains 23 songs - maybe not his best from a jazz purist's point of view, but certainly many of his best "popular" recordings (I would have liked to see "C'est si bon" and one or two others as well, but I'll just have to search for them elsewhere). I highly recommend this album to anyone who has ever heard even one Louis Armstrong song and liked it. Oh, and while you're at it, you might like reading a little bit about his life. That a grandson of slaves, born in abject poverty in 1901 New Orleans, could put so much happiness and soul into so many uplifting songs is inspiring. What a wonderful world indeed. Thanks, Louis.

This is great!!! It will give you a definitive feel and flavour of a truly great jazz genius's mighty talent. It shows his brilliance in every way you could want with some staple favourites and others that set the pitch and tone of a consistently great CD. I'm glad I own it. It is well worth the money. Buy it. You'll love it!!
