Review

The Contra saga started nearly ten years ago in the arcades. With two-player simultaneous action, multiple weapons, and extremely hectic gameplay, it rocketed to the top of everyone's wish list when it was translated to the 8-bit NES. Contra quickly became a legend, spawning sequels all the way up to Contra 3: The Alien Wars on the SNES.

Now Contra enters the 32-bit age with Legacy of War. It drops the side-scrolling motif completely, and instead favors a top-down perspective. The game also features a silly 3-D mode, which requires the super-flimsy red/blue 3-D glasses packaged with the game. If a second player wants to experience 3-D action, however, you'll have to dig up a spare pair of 3-D specs because the game only comes with one set. Not surprisingly, the game's 3-D effects aren't that good, and will probably make your head hurt after a few hours, so sticking with the normal mode is the best bet in the long run.

Players select among four characters, each with different weapons. These range from old-school Contra favorites, such as the spread weapon, to all-new additions that include a flamethrower and homing rounds. The game provides six levels of play, from jungles to rivers. The third level in particular is a standout, where players get to steer a boat around a lake, shooting scuba divers while avoiding mines.

The graphics in Legacy of War are pretty standard. The game sports a few good-looking explosions, and in 3-D mode a lot of explosions result in chunks of metal flying towards the screen. It's a nice touch, but nothing spectacular. The music is also standard military fare, but it sits in the background nicely and doesn't become an annoyance.

Legacy of War is a competent game, but Contra games have never been merely competent. Perhaps this offering would have been better were it not burdened with the Contra name, and the explosive expectations that accompany it. For those looking for a good shooting game with some new twists on gameplay, this title may fit the bill. But for those looking for a real game of Contra, break out the SNES and have at it. --Jeff Gerstmann

I bought this recently for 3 bucks, always thought about trying but never did when it was a 'new' release back in the 32 64 bit era. The only option I had considering the saturn version price was to go with the ps1 version, and it had to be a disc version as there is no psn digital. Imagine the Contra 3 mode seven level with better graphics some polygons and gone is the crappy control scheme of that level. The games graphics are mixture of sprites and polygon characters. The sprite based characters have aged better than the polygon characters. This isn't the best looking game of that era but it doesn't look that bad. The controls aren't great, it'd be better if there was analog support because moving around with the d pad is a bit cumbersome and sloppy. You can jump which is okay but weird in a overhead game like this, especially when you have to jump and shoot at enemies. You can duck, fire in 8 directions. At times I found ways to tame the controls by locking my firing direction but if you can't manage this then it becomes very touchy and hard to hit enemies. It does sound and feel like a contra game. There is a contral game here I just don't know if this is the best control scheme or the best camera angle. I know contra neo for the ps2 is another overhead contra but that works way better. The sounds are classic contra. You get to choose from 4 characters which is good. I guess at the current price of under 10 I'd say it's worth a try

This is the worst Contra game I've ever played. The graphics aren't neat and detailed compared to the SNES Contras. Its hard to tell where the bullets are really going since its in 3D. The bosses suck, and there was no creativity put into them. The 3D mode doesn't work well. It makes the screen darker and its very hard to see even if your turn up the brightness all the way on your TV.

This is one atrocious game! Contra games of the past were dishonored with this piece of garbage.

I have played every game in the Contra series except Contra 4 for the DS. This is the second worst game, just slightly better than C the Contra Adventure. The game is beyond tough, but certainly not in a good way that keeps you coming back for more. It is the type of difficulty that will just make you want to turn the system off and leave the room, slamming the door behind you.

I love a challenge. I grew up playing some of the toughest games on the NES and the Genesis. In Legacy of War for the PlayStation, I can only make it through the very first part of the third level on EASY difficulty.

I recommend playing on EASY difficulty using the CD 228 robot character because he has the best weapon loadout. I don't recommend the other difficulties since you will lose your weapon after one hit on a higher difficulty. Once you pick up the homing rockets, just run like hell around the enemies holding the fire button. I am convinced this is the only way to progress in the game.

The levels have no checkpoints. If at any point you die, you'll be starting from the very beginning. This makes it so hard to progress. If you make it to the end level boss, you will likely only have a couple hit points left. I assure you that isn't enough for the drag out brawl that is about to ensue.

One of the worst things about the game is that you lose all your weapons you have collected at the start of a new level regardless of what difficulty you have set. That's a total slap in the face to the player. Really, shame on them for doing that.

The second level is kinda neat because there are two arcade machines which you can actually play. One is Pactank, and the other game is Gyruss. I spent WAY more time playing Gyruss in level two than I did playing the actual Contra game itself.

Level three is where I just declared enough is enough. You're floating on a raft on a river. Your movement is just so restricted due to being on that small raft. I am convinced it is impossible to clear level three. You must be some sort of savant to beat this game.

I can't recommend this game to anyone unless you are a collector or just absolutely must own every game physically released in the Contra series.
