The installation process was easy and straightforward, I don't understant why so many complain about it. The menu it's easy to understand and play around. The only thing that it's not perfect it's the text which is only like 90% clear when you zoom so you can read it. On the other hand, if you print it out, it's 100% clear. A 4+ star from me.

If you have a reasonable sized hard drive, with an extra 50 Gb or so to play with, this is irresistible, and works fine on my Mac running OS 10.6.8. Swapping optical discs would be a pain, but if you can load it all onto your hard drive, you have every single page of every single National Geographic, going back over a century, easily searchable. Wonderful content of course, and the older issues are a particular treat.

The box enclosing the set is clearly well used despite the sticker on the wrapper stating 'New.' You can clearly see the imprints where the left hand thumb held the front of the box and the left index finger held the rear of the box. Additionally, the corners are lightly colored and worn which show wear over time. I paid for a new set instead of the lesser cost options and expected a 'new' box as well. I now wonder if the contents are new are as used as the box!

While browsing past issues gives me the opportunity to view some of NG's great photographs over the years I find that the text is virtually unreadable. The print is faint,grainy. I have stopped trying to read the articles and only browse the photos.Increasing the zoom does not help, it only makes it worse. Maybe it is only my set. I would like to know if others have had the same problem.

First of all, if you can get this for under £40 it's got to be real bargain considering the massive information content. I bought it because twenty years worth of National Geographic Society magazines was taking up too much space and I just had to get rid of them. I kept all the supplements though because they fit in a fairly small box and NGS maps are pretty good.
Installation is straight forward, although it helps if you pre-install Adobe AIR (free from Adobe web site) beforehand. You can install all six DVDs to a hard drive but, be prepared for a long wait (an hour each if you're lucky, 3-4 hours to USB external drive).
The product itself is basically a collection of thousands of scanned pages with a User Interface that allows searches by year and/or article. There is no text search facility because there is no text. Response is reasonable even if using the DVDs, but installation to hard drive will speed things up significantly. Swapping DVDs all the time is rather a pain.
Like all software products of this nature there are problems and limitations. I wouldn't bother to install this on a laptop say, because the page images are just too small to read. The normal presentation is a double page spread and zooming in and out all the time trying to read an article is extremely frustrating. I tried it with a 17" monitor but, gave up. My 23" monitor is just about acceptable though. Scanned pages are adequate for normal size but, don't expect especially high definition. In fact, the quality is not good with fairly high compression leading to 'artefacts'. This must surely be due to storage limitations - there is nigh on 200k scanned pages taking up 47Gb. One would expect the scanned images to be ordinary jpgs but, they are NGS's own format (cng) that are unreadable elsewhere, a bit of a worry if the software fails in the future and rather pointless to boot. Just for the record (internet search), "The cng files are all jpegs, XOR'd bitwise with 239". Hope that helps! Printing seemed okay for single pages but, I ran into problems trying to print a complete article and had to abort the process. One other thing, if you happen to have a floppy drive on your PC the program keeps trying to access it - WHY?
In conclusion, this product is not what it should be with many failings but, having said that it is a fantastic 'cheap and cheerful' collection of an iconic publication and is worth buying if you want the information but not the mass of paper.

さすがに120年間のすべてを見られるというのは圧巻です。ただし、他の方も書かれているように、２ページ見開きが画像として表示されるだけなので、HTMLやPDFのように本文の単語を検索するような使い方は出来ず、写真集をめくっている感じです。細かい文字を読むために拡大表示しても、ページをめくると元の縮小表示に戻ってしまいます。しかし、120年という量を考えれば、HTMLなどに作り替えるのは無理だったのだろうと納得してしまいます。

DVDのままではページをめくる度にDVDが読み込まれ、表示に時間がかかるため、HDDにインストールすることにしましたが、これが結構苦労しました。購入したDVDのままではインストール機能が正常に動かず、ユーザー登録をした上でソフトを最新版にし、ようやく作業開始。ノートパソコンのSSDにインストールしたのですが、DVDドライブの読み込みが遅く、６枚のDVDで合計11時間ぐらいかかりました。

なお、ユーザー登録をすると、2009年以降も有料ですがダウンロード出来るようで、これはかなりのコレクションが作れそうです。付属のボーナスDVDはリージョン２なので、このままでは見られませんでした。
