What a fantastic program! And what a deal!! I currently subscribe to National Geographic Magazine at $15/year. You can get 121 years of NatGeo for under $30!! It will take a lifetime to read all of these magazines.

The program is very good for its purpose - finding and reading magazines. You can browse by year, subject, or read collections of articles picked by staff members. There is also a search tool, something that makes this tool much better than having these in their original printed version. I have not used this feature very much yet, but I have had no problems so far.

The magazines can either be saved on the hard drive (I did this), or read off the dvd's every time you use the application. Also, you can install some (not all) of the disks. There is no picking and choosing of specific magazines, but you can choose to install the first 3 dvd's, for example. I like that they give this flexibility.

I recommend having a fairly large monitor for reading all the fine print. I have an 18" monitor, but I have to zoom in occasionally to read the text. Not a big deal though.

People are complaining about the picture quality. Yes, they're not as good as the printed edition, but they do the job of creating wonder and awe. Plus, if they used images at the same quality as the printed page, the size of this collection would be astronomical. It's at over 40GB already, so there had to be a compromise on their part.

Overall, I don't understand how people can complain about this package. You get 121 years of the best magazine in the world for less than the price of two years of it, and are given the portability of reading it anywhere you can bring your computer. Once again, what an incredible package!!

The text is blurry. There is an enhance text feature which somewhat addresses the problem by smoothing the fonts, but the text is still too hard to read. Double clicking magnifies the page, at a cost of taking most of the page off the screen. using the keyboard to move the image moves the screen to the next page instead of repositioning the page on the screen. When you do go to the next page, you have to enhance the text and magnify each time. Often, there is a lag time in loading successive pages. Browsing an issue is a frustrating experience. The issue browser is also faulty since the article titles must fit in a small box, with the result that any title longer than three words is cut off, leaving you to guess what the article is about.

The 32 CD-ROM version "National Geographic: 112 Years Collector's Edition" came out eight years ago, and this version (6 DVDs) is a great improvement. The page resolution is greatly improved, making the text easier to read and showing greater detail in the photos. Before, the resolution was "poor." Now, I would say it's "adequate."

Second, a "zoom" feature has been added. With the increased resolution, this allows one to enlarge the text and pictures, so that you can read the text easily, and see the pictures more clearly. In fact, you can fill your entire screen with each page.

Third, the software has improved. Before, the control buttons were located at the bottom of the screen, now they have disappeared, allowing the full page to be displayed using the entire screen. Moving the mouse to the top, bottom, or sides of the screen will cause the option buttons to appear. At the sides, a simple arrow allows you to turn the page. At the top, you can select zoom, and rotate. Or you can zoom by turning the thumb-wheel and move the page by moving the mouse. (Although the text cannot be searched, since each page is a photograph, I was able to find issues I was looking for by using key words).

My collection of NG's goes back to 1909, and the cost of this index is about the same as the cost of one early 1900's NG issue. So, if you are a collector on a budget, this is the way to go.

My computer is two years old running Windows Vista, and I didn't have any trouble installing the software. In less than five minutes, I was looking through the old magazines.

I wanted my review of this product to be about the great content, but the application is extremly slow and makes it almost unusable, even though my computer is way above the system requirements (4Gb RAM, quad core Q9500 2.8GHz processor, compared to the pentium III 1GHz and 512Mb of RAM). I wanted to copy the entire content on my computer in hope that it will speed up the application, but it turns out that there is a bug that prevents it from recognizing the disks (always asking for disk #-1)
If you know exactly what you are looking for and where it is located, you might be able to use it. If you want to browse it and read things that you find interesting, you will find it extremly frustrating and you will give up.

The pircture quality is not great either, quite different compared to those in the real magazine, but they still look nice. Because everything is scanned, when maginified, the text starts to look uneven and pixelated.

I thought the content of this product would be very interesting and I still think it has a high potential, but it's all useless unless they find a much much better implementation than this. This is NOT National Geographic quality.

If you think about how much money you would have spent on National Geographics if you'd been buying them since the mid-nineteenth century, these are stunningly good value and stunningly tiny. The endless rows of yellow spines, whereas they have a kind of sensual appeal, do take up a lot of space and indeed it was once joked that they are causing the North American continent to sink under their weight!

The pages are exact photorealistic replicas of the magazines themselves.

My only complaint is that the software takes a long time to install even if you don't include the files themselves, and the installation process is confusing.

HOWEVER the sollution is to manually set the computers year back to the same year the product was released or earlier. install the product. Then reset your computer to present day.
