Review

Hoping to capture a bit of the same success that PaRappa enjoyed, 989 Studios has brought Enix's Bust A Move (named Bust A Groove here to avoid confusion with Taito's puzzle series) to the States. Rather than clone PaRappa's feel-good style and use button presses to play music, Bust A Groove has you pushing buttons to control one of several dancers in an all-out dance-off.

The gameplay is pretty basic. Two dancers attempt to outdance each other with a large variety of different moves. You pull off moves via a series of onscreen controller commands. The dances branch out into different patterns, and you must sometimes choose one of two possible dance paths. If you perform your moves on time and in sync with the beat, you'll do well. Miss a beat, and your dancer stutters, unable to perform his move. A meter at the bottom of the screen lets you know how both dancers are doing, and whoever has a higher meter at the end of a song wins.

The characters are, essentially, clean versions of the club kids you keep seeing pop up on various daytime talk shows. You've got girls in cat suits, a disco dancer, and a gun-toting lunatic named Strike. A few changes have been made in this domestic release. Strike, while he still manages to sneak two pistols past the doorman, must have had his flask confiscated at the door, 'cause he now packs a can of soda in the small of his back. Also, that pesky no-smoking law has kept Hiro's habit from appearing in the US version.

Graphically, Bust A Groove is great. The characters and backgrounds are varied and extremely colorful. But the real showstopper here is the motion capture. The dancers move extremely well, better than any motion-captured movement I can remember. The music in the game is also varied, ranging from house to disco and just about everything in between. A few songs may be a bit annoying, but they all provide an interesting take on a different musical style.

Bust A Groove won't draw nongamers in like PaRappa did, but it's still quite a bit of fun. The great music and graphics go a long way, and again, the motion capture is really terrific. If PaRappa left you wanting more games in that vein, Bust A Groove makes for a good follow-up. --Jeff Gerstmann

I love this game! This is the first video game that I've played! It is really entertaining, and the best part is each character have their own unique dance move, and of course there is a special dance steps for each character as well. My favorite character is Shorty and Kitty-N. I've finish this game in one sitting, the only regret that I have is my game was freaking STOLEN from my collection! And now I have to buy it again for more than what I paid for the first time...but for me it's worth it.

This is for all ages, not including toddlers of course, and TRY and see it for yourself!

I love this this game as a kid and played it every day that is until my little brother broke it. He claims it was an accident but I think he did it on purpose since he would always lose in it lol. I was devastated because it took us forever to find it in the first place went to so many Walmart's and toys r us's . So when me and my Big sister told our parents what happened they pretty much told us they were not going to go all over the place again to replace it. Which I don't blame them because I wouldn't want to either so for years I never saw site of this game again fast forward to 2015! I saw here on Amazon and was super excited well until I saw the price I wanted a New one but if I wanted it I would have to pay $199.99 and Up for it. I thought to myself forget that and I wasn't trying to buy used because well hey it's used. I decided to go get one and pray it doesn't screw up. I stumbled across one sold by Itna2012 I had asked that if it doesn't work can I return it and get my money back. They said but they assured my that I wont return it and that it will work with no issues. I was sold then and there! I received the game quickly and decided to put Itna2012 money where their is. And to my amazement it ran perfectly I was 100% satisfied with it! the music was jamming as I showed off my old skills. This game was always my favorite as kid and as a adult Warning: Your thumbs will hurt a little at first :D

This game is great. I absolutely loved this game when it first came out and was so happy to get another copy of it. But, it is a used copy and it will not save properly. Something is wrong with the game so I am basically starting from scratch every time I play. Not happy about that.

This is stil a great game! Classic PS game. But, the timing is horrible on the PS3. The bpm calibration is all wrong, making it almost impossible to play the game.

The TNT Product sold me the game and it didn't work properly. I sent it back and told them I just wanted my refund and they tried sending the game back to me saying they aren't allowed to take 'used' products back and don't give refunds. I told them I didn't use the product because it didn't work and she tried to start fighting with me. I repeatedly asked and asked for my money back and she kept giving excuses why they wouldn't and tried sending the game back. I told her I d not want the game back just my money and it too me to threaten to report them to FINALLY just give me back my money.
From now on I'll just make sure I don't purchase anything from TNT Product because I LOVE Amazon. You guys are always so good with my purchases.

I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to relive some childhood memories. This game was popular within my family and I only wish that it was a bit cheaper. Either way I couldn't have asked for anything else. I'm really happy and have been playing the game at least once a month with no issues.

This is one of those obscure titles that most people are unaware of. However, if you're not a fan of the unusual it might not be your cup of tea. Gameplay consists of a series of button presses in time with the 4 beat system, and is a dance battle of sorts. If you're looking for a fighting game this also may not be your cup of tea although there are ways to attack your opponent to ruin his/her chain. Overall I believe this is an unsung classic but will only be appreciated by a certain audience.
