Product Description

Blood Bowl - the game of fantasy football. Based on the famous Warhammer fantasy world and American football, Blood Bowl is a combination of a classic strategy game and a sports game. It’s also an incredibly brutal game, where you lead your team through bonecrunching leagues to compete in the prestigious Blood Bowl Cup! Create your team from the 8 playable races: Humans, Orcs, Wood Elves, Dwarves, Skaven, Lizardmen, Chaos or Goblins and manage them as they gain experience through the many championships and tournaments taking place in the Old World. No Holds Barred: Bribe the referee, foul your opponent as they whimper on the ground, hurl devastating fireballs from the stands or even sneak a chainsaw onto the field, whatever it takes to defeat your opponent… But don’t ever forget the ultimate purpose of the game: Get the ball into the End Zone and score touchdowns!

This game really isn't for the regular fantasy gamer. There are more football rules then expected and a little hard to follow at times if your not sure on some of the terms. The teams are well rounded though, my only complaint is the special players and the cost of getting them.

Most people right away will assume this is just a newer version of the Mutant League games due to the cover being kind of similar. Those people will be wrong ;).

I had read some poor reviews for this game and decided to give it a whirl on PSP, I liked it so much I went out and bought it on XBOX 360 as well, it's primarily the same game just online capable and nicer graphics of course.

Blood Bowl isn't really something I'd recommend to die hard sports fans, it's more for a methodical strategy/rpg gamer or the like. Each team is made up for different races, Orcs, Humans, Elves, Dwarves, etc. The main point of the game is to score touch downs and kick the ball off and tackle your opponents. That's probably about where the similarity to football or even rugby subsides. The whole game is set up by stats, Armor Value, Strength, Move Allowance, and Agility. Each character has different stats and upgrade-able abilities, you gain points to upgrade said abilities by hurting the other team, killing them, or scoring the ball.

The game is played by picking a character and then picking the spot you'd like to move to, sort of like chess. Not a fast paced game by any means. Certain characters can run further, others can hit harder and eventually after many losses you'll learn the scope and rules of the game. Like where to stand to put up a block, when to blitz and hurt your opponents, and how to block in your ball carrier and run up the field after him so you can fend off the other team without the ball being knocked loose by them. Keep in mind all of this is done using the stats, and dice rolls. If you don't hit the mark with your dice roll you will fail miserably and get hurt or just fall down while running too far, or even just fail in picking up the ball off the floor. EVERYTHING is a dice roll. =)

I lost a whole bunch of games before I figured out how to play the game and what abilities did what for me, such as the block ability which let's the person getting hit only get pushed back as oppose to being knocked down or even KO'ed.
There are also a bunch of abilities that let you pick up the ball with better odds, hit people harder, intercept more often, and much much more.

It's fun to customize your team and give them new abilities and level them up to take on the competition. Eventually you'll get the jist of the game-play as long as you are a patient person who can invest some time. But be warned the learning curve is pretty steep, and more often than not the difficulty is very very hard. The AI seems to get great dice rolls and pick up the ball and throw and run perfectly for the most part. But boy does it feel like you accomplished something when you finally kick their butts and score a touch down.

A great title with a lot of fun to be had as long as you don't mind very slow paced games, and have the time to put in to learn the ins and outs.

Game-play: B+ (Great when you get the hang of it)
Graphics: B (Nicer up close, but most of the time far back so you can see positioning)
Sound: B Lots of grunts, with a decent soundtrack to get you pumped)
Fun: A (I'm addicted)
Difficulty: A (very hard, very steep learning curve, frustrating at times)

Overall: B+ (Would be higher if the AI wasn't so difficult, and if the tutorial explained things better)

Let me begin by stating that I have played the original table top Blood Bowl game for many years, so the overall game is not a new experience to me. I have read many people trying to say it is a rip-off of this or that and let me be clear - it most definitely is not! It is a faithful adaptation of the table top game.

Now I have to say, with that in mind, the game is a lot of fun! You have to use tactics and careful planning to challenge your opponent. Different formations are available and you need to analyze what players you have available and what approach you will be taking to the match. Pick up the ball and throw a bomb down field? Or try to massacre the opponent and then score. The game is really similar to one part chess, one part football, one part strategy, one part fantasy warhammer-type style. This to me, is a good thing and makes for a fantastic mix! As your team advances you will have some tough decisions about what skills to take and who to give the most benefits to. You will want to buy an apothecary early because you know that catcher you just gave sprint and an agility bonus to? You're playing a Chaos team next and he can easily be stomped to a bloody pulp, negating all of your careful skill planning! It's stuff like that which makes this game a blast to play.

I am a little disappointed in the A.I. of this game. The A. I doesn't really take any crazy "longshots" even if the game is on the line. For example, I was playing against a lizardman team. I am winning 1-0 and it is turn 16, last move of the game for them. They have the ball in their own end with a skink and there is a skink in my half that is within distance of the endzone (although it would have to make dodge roll with two of my players in tackle zones and go for it twice to score). The computer simply tried to maim my players (which it did do a good job of) but never tries that possible scoring chance. I switched the difficulty to "hard" and similar scenarios came up. The "hard" setting simply means the computer will get more favorable dice results against you, it won't mean better A. I. tactics.
Even with that being said, it is still a challenging game, just wish that could have been developed better.

One other minor complaint is that I feel the 'agility" based teams have more of an advantage because of the above A. I. tactics. Maybe that's just me.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has played the original table top version of Blood Bowl. If you have not played that, I would recommend it before buying this game, as many people seem to not fully understand the game who haven't played the table top and the instructions with the PSP game can be a little "wordy" or tough to grasp without examples.

One final thing for anyone reading this - the PC version has a dark elf team that was able to be downloaded for free. I wonder if such a thing is available or will become available for the PSP version?

Here's hoping you don't roll double skulls! See you on the pitch!

This game is based on an old RPG-type board game. I never played it. I did play Mutant League Football for Sega Genesis eons ago and was looking for a similar game (since EA is doing nothing with the property).

This game is nothing like that (except for the maiming). But it is still fun once you get the hang of certain gameplay elements. You take turns moving your players (running, passing and blocking) to set up plays and score a touchdown. There's A LOT more strategy (hence the RPG element) than that but i am not going to give an in-depth analysis. I just wanted to get this game a review since a lot of people may not have heard of it. I can tell you that that doesn't speak to the game's quality, more likely the complete lack of marketing put forth by the publishers. It's shame since the mixture of fantasy fiction and fantasy football would make for a good commercial and the game has stats up the wazoo that people heavily into fantasy football could easily adjust too in the NFL off-season.

If i had to sum up a description of what you may be getting yourself into, take one part football, one part turn-based strategy and pepper in some dwarves and orcs and elves.. or whatever team race you decide to try out.
