Aeroparque Airport, in Buenos Aires, will stop operating international flights in 2018

Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport

Aeroparque Airport in Buenos Aires is known to be close to the center of Buenos Aires, while Ezeiza is a considerable distance away. This was an option for Brazilians who needed to go straight to the central area of the Argentine capital, but as of 2018 this will not be possible.

The government of Argentina has already taken the decision that actually bans international flights at Aeroparque, making room for more domestic flights at the airport, but this represents a complication for flights operated from Uruguay, the travel time from Ezeiza to the center of Buenos Aires can exceed the transport time by road, when also considering the total flight time.

Just for comparison, Aeroparque is 7 km from the center of Buenos Aires, while Ezeiza Airport is 31,2 km away.

The main argument used by the authorities in Argentina is exactly the increase in slots at the airport, to reinforce the domestic operations of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Flybondi and Avianca Argentina. The transfer of international flights is scheduled to start in April 2018 and will run through 2019.

It is worth remembering that this situation is not new, in Brazil Congonhas Airport operates exclusively domestic flights, likewise until 2010 Aeroparque only operated domestic flights, while Ezeiza was in charge of all international operations. Currently, Aeroparque has 340 daily movements, transporting almost 12 million passengers per year.

Along with the transfer, the Argentine Government wants to improve the growth of Aerolíneas Argentinas, increase the infrastructure of Aeroparque and improve the capabilities of the airspace of Buenos Aires, allowing a greater number of operations per hour in Aeroparque.

Even so, Aeroparque cannot receive long-distance international flights, since its runway is only 2100 meters long, but it receives flights directly from neighboring countries, such as Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.
