Violence against women and girls in the 21st century remains a common and profoundly consequential viola-tion of women’s human rights. It is part of gender inequality, an integral part of the social system, and linked to other aspects of human and eco-nomic development. When reporting about it, the media produce addition-al damage by continuously highlight-ing the hostile and violent treatment of women. Representations of gender and sexuality in the news reinforce the common perception that women are sexual objects and therefore disadvan-tage women, continuously reinforcing imbalances of power between women and men. This study explores media representations in Croatian online media articles about violence against women. The results of analysis show how violence against women is framed as a private problem, how women are addressed as unfaithful wives and prostitutes which gives excuses for the perpetrator while the blame for the vi-olence is partly shifted to the woman. Also, results show how the secondary victimization is manifested in articles, and how violence against women as a topic is exploited to attract the read-ers’ attention.

The Representation of Honor Killings inTurkish Media2022 •
Violence against women is one of the most common violations of human rights in the world. Women have been subjected to honor violence throughout history and continue to being subjected to such violence in different cultures worldwide. Killing in the name of honor are justified in a society when the rules of honor are dictated by men and shaped around women’s bodies and sexuality, which are disregarded by women. The study aims to understand whether the way media treatments femicide reinforces the existing perception of honor or not. In other words, the purpose of the study is to examine if the media uses a patriarchal language, how it captures the victims and perpetrators, how it normalizes and justifies the violence while publishing the news about honor killings. News regarding violence against women, published in two of the national newspapers daily between 2012-2014 were examined within the scope of the study and femicide reports committed on behalf of honor were selected. Selected news is analyzed using critical discourse analysis. As the result of this analysis, it was observed that the news on honor killings focused more on the popular aspect of the murder in a sensational manner. Such news used a patriarchal language, justified the violence based on the honor issues, and emphasized that women were killed due to their lack of obedience towards their husbands, and that they dishonored their family.

Critical Framing Analysis: Violence Against Women on Online MediaThe journalistic problem that arises when covering women issues at national and global levels showed that the dominant issues in the mass media were masculine. Women issues were dominant in alternative media. It was assumed that the alternative media use feminist journalism framing in its content. This research used media framing theory as the second level of agenda-setting theory that is supported by standpoint theory in critical paradigm to understand the phenomena. It used descriptive-qualitative approach with critical framing analysis design. The object of study covered 39 articles in February 2022 edition of Konde.Co and Magdalene.Co. The alternative media were chosen because they had feminist vision. The data was analyzed using Robert T. Entmant’s procedure, namely: define problem; diagnosis of causes; make moral judgments; and treatment recommendations. The results showed that almost all the existing articles applied the principles of feminist journalism. The framing of wom...
A preliminary examination of the literature documenting the image, role and social conditions of portraying victimized women in mass media confronted us with another typical problem pervading mass communication research and social studies in general; a research field in a continuous state of flux, and the absence of accurate research methods to analyse the interdependence of its components. The image of victimized women in mass media cannot be studied in isolation from the broad socioeconomic , political and cultural context at a specific point in time. How victimized women are represented in mass media ultimately results from an interplay of forces which mould social reality stereotyping women. One of these social forces is mass media. The communication media produces message systems and symbols which create or structure prevailing images of social reality, thus affecting the process of social change. The processing of this diversified mass of victims primarily motivated by the conviction that mass media is highly influential in shaping people's perception attitude and content. Mas media had developed a tendency to arouse sympathy for the victim by showcasing her as a medium to attract reader's attention. Even in the more sincere and more sympathetic portrayal of attacked women especially the victims of rape or acid attack, media gave them no personal space for their worries. In almost all cases media is marketing the tears of the victim as a tool for competition. The fatal gang rape of a 23 year old in a moving in the national capital and the recent death of a law student serves as example for the medias portrayal of victimized women. The media celebrated the two issues raised the question of the safety of wome in the country and demanded justice for women. But in the same way it highlighted the weakness of women. At present news media sells the misery of the victim to raise the ratings. Here , the need to study on the 'Portrayal of victimized women in the media'.
Although we differentiate and name anything we give an eye to, what the science we study and try to understand and be part of it is the rest of one's self. Primary concern of this study is to examine how differently the same even has been reported in two different newspapers. The news has been entitled with " Nothing less than kid brides " in Milliyet Newspaper and " Organized a first sexual experience for his 14 year-old-son and Got engaged in a lawsuit " in Cumhuriyet Newspaper, which is about a father who arranges a meeting for his son to have sex for the first time. The event has been reported in different ways choosing different words in Milliyet and Cumuriyet Newspapers. In order to understand what is going on around us and why it is as it is, we should deconstruct what is already constructed in the society, so in this paper in the frame of discourse analysis of a child abuse news, a few aspects of human beings will be discussed in order to prove what matters actually is humanity. Although it is human beings what matters, for the sake of social systems, beliefs and old traditions, they happen to be overlooked. Accordingly, Teun A. van Dijk's discourse analysis and related social and psychological interpretations will be used to have a good grasp of ourselves in our small world. After brief background information about discourse analysis and the models used accordingly, the news about a father who forces his son to have sex with a woman, and its possible consequences will be discussed. Introduction This study is concerned with the presentation of the event in the press when a father organizes a sexual experience for his 14 year old boy in order to make him ready for adulthood stage, which is generally regarded as a necessary ritual to prove of manhood and such social norms are reproduced through media in modern societies. When analyzed the same news in two different newspapers Milliyet Newspaper and Cumhuriyet Newspaper, it is found out that all the news present a certain perspective to the reader and gender norms are reproduced. It is clear that what the father of a 14 year old boy has done is accepted as newsworthy but it is important to know from what perspective the event has been entreated in order to determine the social attitude towards such manhood rituals having sex with women because it is known that there has been so many such examples in history of Turkey. One of them is a film " EgretiGelin " based on the novel of Sukran Kozali EgretiGelinler and it has made a tremendous impact on both Turkish people and the critics. This film

Media Construction of Gender: Framing Analysis of Rape Cases in Mass Media2013 •
Construction of the printed media which tends to dramatize and blow up the reporting of rape cases has in fact discredited the rape victim, resulting in gender bias. This is due to the fact that media present the news content concerning on the victim and the perpetrator in imbalanced reporting, in that the victims are scrutinized from diverse facets. This paper analyze the coverage of printed media in rape cases by means of framing analysis. The result shows that printed media coverage generally goes beyond the rape case itself as the victim’s identity and images of the incident are also revealed. The using of visual image (victim’s image) is probably aimed to present an overview on the fact or the truth from the media viewpoint. This presentation, however, obscures the differences between factual and fictional reality and this might lead to different interpretation on the readers’ side. Furthermore, inappropriate reporting might become the society’s reference concerning on the mod...
