We propose to translate the Latin works of the Renaissance, particularly poems, using the words and expressions of the Spanish language of that time. We explain some techniques such as the use of dictionaries from Latin to Spanish printed in Early Modern Times, and concordances of the main authors of Spanish Golden Age, which seems particularly appropriate in the case of bilingual poets.

Luis de Peraza, who wrote around 1535 the first known History of Seville, was a student of Pedro Núñez Delgado, a Latin professor in the cathedral school of Sevilla. He belongs, therefore, to the third generation of poets and humanists of the Renaissance of Seville, who lived under the reign of Emperor Charles. In addition to a few Spanish hymns in praise of the cathedral, and some Iambic dimeters of a Latin hymn to St. Laurean, he composed an epigram in ten distichs in praise of Jerónimo de Chaves, translator of the Tractado de la sphera de Sacrobosco (Seville, 1545). The edition and translation of the poem is followed by its comment. The solemn epic expressions from Virgil, Ovid, Lucan and Manilius, along with other less important imitations of Martial, Horace and Persius; the mythological allusions, the chosen words and a series of very striking phonic resources, all give the poem a serious style, even excessively pretentious and obscure. Peraza's life and work testifie the continuity of the humanistic tradition around the cathedral school of Seville, although he himself was a private teacher in the palace of the counts of Gelves, one of the most celebrated Literary academies of Renaissance Seville.

Abstract: The author uses Parthenius’ prose opusculum in order to illustrate the misuse of Plutarch as a source for the reconstruction of a Hellenistic poetic passage, as well as to highlight the mistake of making conjectures beyond reasonable assumptions without considering other literary or poetological factors that do not support such a hypothesis. Keywords: Plutarch’s Life of Pyrrhus, Parthenius of Nicaea, Cheilonis, poetical reception.
This is an analysis of the contests of Latin poetry in Alcala de Henares, Salamanca and Seville between 1531 and 1575. The author deals with the promoters of these contests, their social and political implications, the contestants, the judges, the literary genres and extent of the poems, the prizes and their winners. He provides some criteria to judge the quality of these poems and the literary skills and knowledge of ancient authors of their authors. He explains how these contests are intended to spread the humanistic values, to promote the best poets, and to give fame to the patrons of the contests. The contests of Seville are the oldest ones, while those of Alcala de Henares are more prestigious, and those of Salamanca the best and more expensive prizes.
