Perceau's work "is a model of bibliographical perfection that has reduced at least one later worker to near-despair of ever being able to emulate it. Superbly organised, for all normal purposes complete, and possessing no few than eight indexes (titles, authors, editions, statistics, reprints, library and private collectors' holdings, imprints, and names), this is an indispensable tool of research" (Peter Fryer, 'Private Case, Public Scandal', pp. 68-9). Deakin 63. Original wrappers. There is some chipping to the wrappers at head and foot of spine, otherwise a very good set.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 16mo. 48p. Stapled booklet in lapping brown wrappers printed in black. Just touches of wear to extremities, corners square and flat, no rust on the staples, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. James McGregor Beatty (1881-1939), a songwriter, poet, and former vaudevillian, was the President of the Francis Church of Truth Spiritualist in Los Angeles, pastored by George Francis, this book's publisher. A fictionalized account which supports the notion of spiritualism, Under Surveillance tells the tale of how a man unjustly accused of murder is aided by his former friend, now dead, the latter having been summoned by a medium. Beatty also wrote Pesky Problems for Positive Preachers, which argues for the truth of spiritualism. He came to be known as the "Sage of Sleepy Hollow," after he and his mother bought property in the Carbon Canyon area of Los Angeles, where he lived from the mid-1920s until his death. This is a rare piece of spiritualist literature and Southern California ephemera.

Softcover. Condition: Near fine. Four-page pamphlet (single sheet, folded), 4.25 x 6.75 inches, printed in blue on cream stock. One tiny nick on first page, else fine. After explanatory remarks, Drury reprints excerpts of (mostly critical) reviews of his book, "Drury's Comical French Grammar; or French, in an Amusing Point of View," published by George Rivers in 1878. He comments in part that "he thanks his numerous critics for their genuine criticisms which, after all, are really amusing and contradictory, because each editor has taken his sight from a different 'point of view,' whilst the author compiled it with a view to amusement and instruction combined (had it been entirely Comic it could scarcely have been useful); thus he trusts the public will partake freely of either the amusement or instruction in his Comical Grammar, as may seem most adapted to their tastes, and which they can do through any bookseller."
