Compulsively readably (few will put it down unless they must), it is an amazing picture of a prophet surrounded by his adorers. The whole set-up is vividly evoked - the great man's emigre Russian family and friends, the students, the disciples who come and go, the weekend visitors, the bevy of children (of whom Fritz is one). There's a great deal of petty rivalry and squabbling, and Gurdjieff is always there to mete out eccentric punishment or reward. Sometimes he isn't there - he goes to Paris, he goes to take the waters at Vichy - and then the community embarks on worse squabbling which he has to sort out when he comes back." - from dust-jacket blurb.
